In my opinion this year we need to do what Toronto did in 2011. Find a trade partner that wants to trade us a young good OF for Hels Maton and Matz or something similar. We are not contenders. Our bullpen might not be the best but those pieces could help a contender get to the WS.
Same with Nootbar.
Mootbaar should have been traded 4 years ago when I was first to advise it.
Maybe this is the year they finally get it right.

“There are a handful of teams at least poking around on Matz,” per Goold.

He adds that the Cardinals will also likely be open to offers on righty Phil Maton but would need a very strong offer to trade closer Ryan Helsley, who could receive a qualifying offer if he’s not moved.
thx.
saw that earlier on MLBTR.
teams certainly SHOULD BE interested in Maton, at least, I would think
Goold is a shill for the Cards. It won’t happen. (If it does they are far dumber than I imagined.)
Good thoughts and I agree with your post.

He reported what he's heard/been told. How does that make him a "shill"?
I've been reading him for 15 years or so and he's aligned with the front office position far more than a beat writer should be. IMHO
Here's a picture I got of him not long ago.

I have been correctly analyzing and explaining since last October that if STL is within 5 games of the division lead at the deadline, Mo would probably prefer to keep Helsley and take the comp pick in the off-season.
And that, of course, would mean offering a QO.
Which would be declined.
Easy.
Obvious.
Correct.
Somewhat similarly to your position last year that the Cardinals should have offered a QO to Goldschmidt because that too would have been declined?

Even better - Mel wanted the Cards to sign Matt Adams after his time in DC in early 2020 to platoon with Goldy. "Matt Adams is officially off the board. Sure thought he could have formed a good platoon with Goldschmidt."

Laughably bad call on Adams. He never wants to talk about his massively bad takes.

He has so many great ideas. And don't forget that he has been constantly talking up Pages' so-called catching ERA. The trouble is, it's only mostly good when Sonny starts. Funny how that works.
