Goold: Matz drawing interest from handful of teams
Cardinals lefty Steven Matz has drawn some trade interest as the July 31 deadline inches closer, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (video link, bullpen talk beginning around the 4:10 mark).
“There are a handful of teams at least poking around on Matz,” per Goold.
He adds that the Cardinals will also likely be open to offers on righty Phil Maton but would need a very strong offer to trade closer Ryan Helsley, who could receive a qualifying offer if he’s not moved.

Please trade him. What a disastrous contract they gave him. Anything we can get for him, even a lottery ticket, is worth it.

He gave up a two-run homerun in 3 out 4 appearances a few weeks back.
That will earn a Yepez like return, which is fine with me as well.

I would be SHOCKED if Bloom gave Helsley a qualifying offer. Mozeliak would do that.

He is never gonna get a $20+M QO. He isn't worth that, a rare even for a closer to get $20+M/season. Has anyone ever?
Re: Goold: Matz drawing interest from handful of teams
At the $21.05 million QO he'd get this year, he'd be the highest paid reliever in history (Diaz $20.4 and Hader $19M).PacNWCardsfan2 wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 14:22 pm He is never gonna get a $20+M QO. He isn't worth that, a rare even for a closer to get $20+M/season. Has anyone ever?
It. Won't. Happen.

BDWJr would choke if asked to make a QO to Helsley, agreed never happening.ClassicO wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 14:27 pmAt the $21.05 million QO he'd get this year, he'd be the highest paid reliever in history (Diaz $20.4 and Hader $19M).PacNWCardsfan2 wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 14:22 pm He is never gonna get a $20+M QO. saw that earlier on MLBTR.
teams certainly SHOULD BE interested in Maton, at least, I would think
Re: Goold: Matz drawing interest from handful of teams
Goold is a shill for the Cards. It won’t happen. (If it does they are far dumber than I imagined.)82birds wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 14:57 pmthx.rockondlouie wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 12:16 pm Cardinals lefty Steven Matz has drawn some trade interest as the July 31 deadline inches closer, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (video link, bullpen talk beginning around the 4:10 mark).

Maton has more value with Cards if they keep winning than anything they’ll receive back in a trade…..do we need more middling AA roster fill?rockondlouie wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 12:16 pm Cardinals lefty Steven Matz has drawn some trade interest as the July 31 deadline inches closer, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (video link, bullpen talk beginning around the 4:10 mark).

Agreed, keep Maton and trade Helsley for the better return. Cards likely won’t notice the difference this yearGoldfan wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 15:32 pmMaton has more value with Cards if they keep winning than anything they’ll receive back in a trade…..do we need more middling AA roster fill?rockondlouie wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 12:16 pm Cardinals lefty Steven Matz has drawn some trade interest as the July 31 deadline inches closer, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (video link, bullpen talk beginning around the 4:10 mark).

That’s a good idea especially if you paired maton with helsley I think a contender would give up a good prospect or two for two late inning relievers82birds wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 15:38 pmI meant Maton +Goldfan wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 15:32 pmMaton has more value with Cards if they keep winning than anything they’ll receive back in a trade…..do we need more middling AA roster fill?rockondlouie wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 12:16 pm Cardinals lefty Steven Matz has drawn some trade interest as the July 31 deadline inches closer, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (video link, bullpen talk beginning around the 4:10 mark).

I've been reading him for 15 years or so and he's aligned with the front office position far more than a beat writer should be. IMHOmudpuppy37 wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025 15:14 pmHe reported what he's heard/been told. How does that make him a "shill"?
Here's a picture I got of him not long ago.
