Re: Go for it. Eff the retool
Mo’s role at the deadline will be to execute the deals Bloom and BDWII dictate. Mo no longer has the authority or autonomy to make deals on his own. He’ll handle the paperwork, and probably, the negotiations themselves, but any deal will require the blessings of Bloom and DeWitt.
Any starters being added will be McGreevy or Mathews, maybe Roby. If Matz is dealt, maybe the Cardinals get a Lane Thomas. More likely, they’ll get a JA Happ return. Same for Fedde.

I mostly stand pat. There's not a clear area where we NEED to make up ground. We're pretty balanced. Above average in most ways, but not great in anything.
I'd ship off a starter--either Erick or Miles--and backfill with McGreevy. He's performing well in Memphis and doing well when he's here, so I don't see a morale loss.
MAYBE you get rid of Hels. But I need a BIG overpay. That loss would likely be a hit to morale, since there's no clear successor.
Chemistry looks great right now. I think if you more or less stand pat. You can sell it as "We believe in you. Go show us what you're made of".
At the end of the season, we'll have more money off the books, and you go shopping then.

If injuries happen, I'd make a move. Otherwise I'd stand pat. They're playing great, winning baseball with a team nobody expected anything from. Don't mess with the chemistry or mortgage the future, just ride with what they got.

I’m stoked because they are playing well this early in the reset. Can’t wait till they complete the overhaul. We should be a power.
Re: Go for it. Eff the retool
"Go for it," meaning more winless games in the playoffs? Those sure are fun.
They don't have the SP to make a deep run in the playoffs, so it would HAVE to be SP and those guys cost dearly. What's the point of a rebuild if you trade away your prospects? Are there teams looking to trade a good SP for a Catcher who's going to play 130 games? I highly doubt that. I guess we could throw in Mikolas. Fedde has no more control years so he's useless to a tanking team.
We'll talk again at the All Star Break. May 30 is not the time. And no one is selling SP right now regardless.
HOWEVER...if they want to pick up one bullpen guy at any point, I'd support that, because it's desperately needed and relievers are not that hard to come by. That's a quick fix to get them to 90 wins and see what happens.

I keep trying to say, let's build a team for 95 wins and see what happens.
Re: Go for it. Eff the retool
The thing about this team is it's not like they have 7 veterans in walk years with no young talent/farm system.
This team is filled with mostly young players and vets with NTCs backed up by modest contracts.
"RETOOL!!!" is more or less just about whether to trade Helsley/Fedde/Maton.
I'm all for the team standing pat. Maybe creatively trading Fedde or Palante for a reliever and bringing up McGreevy.
But standing pat at the deadline in no way turns the back on the plan.

Re: Go for it. Eff the retool
Pretty much agree. In the highly unlikely event that someone wants Nado and he wants to go there for some halfway decent prospect return, then I do that as well. Then Donnie can play 3B and Saggese can be recalled and play 2B. Gorman gets spot starts. But unlikely Nado is going anywhere. Perhaps one of the kids can be a BP piece as well. But unless some team bowls you over with a great offer, this is the team you have this season, plus a few AAA pieces like Saggese and McGreevy to backfill or cover injuries. Roll with it....ecleme22 wrote: ↑30 May 2025 13:19 pm The thing about this team is it's not like they have 7 veterans in walk years with no young talent/farm system.

The one move I hope Bloom/Mo makes is adding an arm to the pen'.
Re: Go for it. Eff the retool
Lineup is under control and set. Rotation needs one more starter if Mathews or Hence isn’t ready. Bullpen needs a lot of work.

Re: Go for it. Eff the retool
I’m curious, in your scenario, do we just let Fedde, Mikolas, Matz and Helsley walk at year’s end? With no return? That is the risk you run by not trading them at the deadline.vegascardsfan5890 wrote: ↑29 May 2025 21:21 pm Playoffs aren't guaranteed in the future. Keep the vets
Make a trade for a starter at the deadline. Maybe some bench help
Need to do something with Gorman
Re: Go for it. Eff the retool
Honestly I doubt you get much for either of the first 3. They are all FA’s to be and all of them have pretty sketchy track records. And the 2 SPs don’t have good peripherals that teams would be looking for. So I wouldn’t really be worrying about what we might miss out on. It’s likely to be more along the lines of the Flaherty return.BrockFloodMaris wrote: ↑30 May 2025 15:10 pmI’m curious, in your scenario, do we just let Fedde, Mikolas, Matz and Helsley walk at year’s end? Helsley is another story, but he also might the one of the 4 that you might think about re-signing.

Re: Go for it. Eff the retool
It's not just a risk- it's a certainty. i've seen enough things done a little differently this year that I am not without hope, but I have this sick feeling that the Cardinals are going to do the thing they always do. That bland, middling, indecisive thing. The thing that put us in the middle in the standings, middle in the power rankings, middle in attendance, middle in payroll. That mediocre, irrelevant middle. The do enough to keep people coming without really investing, or changing middle. I hope that come August, this post looks silly.BrockFloodMaris wrote: ↑30 May 2025 15:10 pmI’m curious, in your scenario, do we just let Fedde, Mikolas, Matz and Helsley walk at year’s end? And accuse those who take exception as being “little trolls”. You need to grow up, sir. Be a male.
Back to baseball. The mix of vets and developing young guys on this team is good. A successful formula for the future. If you made a trade for a veteran position player or signed one to a FA contract, where would you play him? Who would sit?
