No argument. I think he'll still be ready in July. Possibly, more ready. Just my opinion.zbasspro wrote: ↑29 May 2025 19:00 pmIf there is anyone in the minors ready for it, it's McGreevy.hugeCardfan wrote: ↑29 May 2025 18:53 pmI know. I follow duce's thread too. But, there is no urgency to pitch him every 5th day. My guess is that the wear and tear won't be as great as well. If the FO thought it would be beneficial to sit McGreevy for ten days, 2 weeks, the season consequences would be negligible in AAA.MIDMOBIRDTWO wrote: ↑29 May 2025 18:42 pmHuge, he is throwing six innings a game in Memphis anyway. Not that big a difference in the majors.hugeCardfan wrote: ↑29 May 2025 18:38 pm I think it's too early. Put McGreevy into the race this soon may burn him out innings wise. I don't have a problem bringing him up a time or two, or in July...but now, I think, too soon.
I just don't think McGreevy has built his arm up enough over the last couple years to go straight to the majors and play out a full postseason.

Pallante does have limited upside - but also limited downside.rockondlouie wrote: ↑29 May 2025 13:37 pm I'd send A. Pallante to Memphis today and recall M. McGreevy (6-1/3.02 ERA/9.6 SO9 at Memphis).

4.96 ERA
4.86 FiP
1.48 WHiP

And once again he can't get out RHH'ers:

Not sure why Mo is sticking w/him and not giving McGreevy his shot.
Stupid to keep running Pallante out there to get clobbered when you have McGreevy on the runway and ready to land in St. Louis if he was just given his shot.
Just like he did sticking w/R. Fernandez for too long, Mo is once again AWOL.
Wake up Mo!
Send Pallante to Memphis and recall McGreevy.
Youth, cost, and predictability are on his side.
The better move for STL is to trade Mikolas.
He is getting very close to the point of being owed only 7 or 8 million - and that should make him a reasonably attractive trade target for teams who are in need of starting pitching but unwilling or unable to pay too much in dollars or prospects.
Very, very easy to move him - even with his NTC.
That creates the space for McGreevy.
Re: Time to send Pallante down & recall McGreevy
McGreevy will be up eventually but probably not until after the deadline.
And as long as they keep playing well I don’t see rotation changes until then.
Mikolas and/or Matz could be dealt.
And even if Pallante is pulled from rotation I doubt he is demoted.
Could certainly use him in the BP!

I agree with you about RH, Bird. Some on here suggest that we should keep RH, offer him a QO and take the comp pick. I don’t know bout all that.MIDMOBIRDTWO wrote: ↑29 May 2025 18:36 pmThat would be the correct move for the team to make IMO. But, very rarely do starting rotations make it the entire year without a starter going down. If my memory is correct, 2015 is the last year the Cards achieved that. So more likely than not, McGreevy will get his chance. Second, trading when you are winning doesn't seem like a good clubhouse move. Lets see how this plays out.

Why trade them for AAAA players. We need more SP.BrockFloodMaris wrote: ↑29 May 2025 16:47 pmPallante and McGreevy will both be in the starting rotation after August 1. Mikolas is the one heaving meat up there with regularity. He has nothing stuff and depends mostly on 100 mph rockets being caught.
The sooner he can be gone, the better. And McGreevy can take HIS place.

doubt if they would send pallante down as he was an effective reliever before. doesn't seem like mgr has much confidence in Roycroft? as he doesn't use him much. more likely to have him move down, tho wasn't he a closer in minors?
Pallante is more effective against LHers so there is that and in shorter outings could prove effective against RHers.

But perhaps given he's seeking a new contract, and not getting it from the Cardinals, he would?
There would be a large market for him and w/the way he's pitching he could actually now bring back a decent prospect, who would've thunk it?

Re: Time to send Pallante down & recall McGreevy
I came across this last night from Bernie on Pallante, good stuff and echoes what I thought and why I want him sent down if he doesn't turn things around real, real soon:
The really bad stuff? In his last eight starts the right-handed Pallante has been smacked by right-swinging hitters for a .326 average, .389 onbase percentage, nine extra-base hits and a .547 slugging rate. Over that time, RH batters have pounded him for a 45 percent hard-hit rate, walked 10 percent of the time, and struck out in only 14.7 percent of their plate appearances.
So what’s the problem? Pallante’s four-seam fastball and sinkers are glaringly ineffective when used against RH batters. In his last eight starts, right-handed batters have torn into Pallante’s four-seamer and sinker for 21 hits in 56 at-bats (.375) for three doubles and three homers and a .767 slugging percentage. And his walk rate against them (8.2%) over the last eight starts is nearly the same as his strikeout rate (9.8%).
Opposing managers are doing the Cardinals and Pallante a merciful favor by declining to stack their lineup with right-handed batters. Eventually the other dugout will wake up and Pallante will become even more vulnerable than he is. At some point Michael McGreevy deserves to have an opportunity to start for the big club in St. Louis. So far this 2025 “runway” season doesn’t apply to McGreevy.

Only an opinion but I think the rotation looks much different in 2026:
Gray- a definite unless traded
Pallante- probable but could be BP?
Libby- same as Pallante
Fedde/Matz/Mikolas- all FA’s. Any or all could be gone.
McGreevy/Mathews/Hence/Roby/etc- waiting in the wings.
Patience it’s still May and playing well.
No need in my opinion to push the younger guys!
