Re: Contreras 21 Ks in 42 ABs

It's the jinx of hitting 2nd on this team. Last year when goldy was moved there, he was equally bad. I domt know if anyone wants to hit 2nd any more!

Its a slump for sure, but it's a long season.2ninr wrote: ↑09 Apr 2025 05:32 amI agree with your assessment, but isn't 20 strikeouts in 40 at bats and no other production a prolonged slump?Chubbs0910 wrote: ↑08 Apr 2025 23:36 pm This is purely speculation but..
Contreras does not seem like a very bright guy. He is talented, dedicated & passionate but certain nuances of the game seem to elude him.
And for that reason im not worried about his slow start. Guys like that are immune to prolonged slumps bc they don't let the past linger.
I dont think you go with 3 rookie managers with increasingly less mlb experience to relinquish control. Mo and his analytics team dictates the regular lineup.ilcubuffs wrote: ↑09 Apr 2025 10:44 am What have noticed about Contreras in his slump.
1. Pitchers are increasing their rhythm in delivering pitches. They get the ball from catcher and are ready to deliver. When you are struggling you fall into that rhythm. Probably not the approach Contreras is comfortable.
2. Contreras gets to 0 - 2 very quickly. He knows the next pitch is on outside corner. He is leaning to the point he is heading to the dugout while swinging. It is like the batters box is filled with lava and he wants out. Needs to return to "balance" he is accustomed.
3. Not sure the AB's numbers on his batting in 2 hole, but it is not what he is accustomed. IF you have a competent manager with cajones he would move him to 3 or 5 hole. This group failed horribly with Goldy in 2 hole. Now wants muck up Contreras. If it is Marmot or Elkins making this decision someone needs to intervene and make the changes.
Contreras is very good MLB player. Cardinals are making him look like a A rookie. He needs to be in place where he has been successful.
It isn't the first time he's had a stretch where he looked like he had never been able to hit. Kind of fits the profile you were talking about. I'm ready for good Willy.Chubbs0910 wrote: ↑09 Apr 2025 09:28 amIts a slump for sure, but it's a long season.2ninr wrote: ↑09 Apr 2025 05:32 amI agree with your assessment, but isn't 20 strikeouts in 40 at bats and no other production a prolonged slump?Chubbs0910 wrote: ↑08 Apr 2025 23:36 pm This is purely speculation but..

Yep, Willy hit about .150 through the first 6-7 weeks of 2023 when Oli had him hitting 5th and I'm pretty sure he was the only player whose batting position didn't change until June. Of course, by then, the season was over. Marmol's obsessed with him unlike any other player on the roster.2ninr wrote: ↑09 Apr 2025 17:32 pmIt isn't the first time he's had a stretch where he looked like he had never been able to hit. It might be as simple as your favorite 2>>>>5 spots argument. Check out those splitsrockondlouie wrote: ↑09 Apr 2025 08:53 am I know I'll get speared by some (hello scouty) but could this be as simple as WillyC just isn't comfortable at 1st base and needs to be back behind the plate?
Why I as is look at his career splits when catching vs DHing:
Willy when Catching:
.262 .354 .478
Willy when DHing:
.239 .349 .397
You have to keep him in the lineup, but lower third would be appropriate. Oli has to toughen up and move players down or play someone else for a game when their performance warrants it. And I don't mean a bad series. Maybe that's a thread. How long do you give a vet player before you move him out of the production spots in the lineIp? A dozen games maybe. It depends too. Is he walking any? Is he hitting into bad luck? That ain't Willy. Can't hit into bad luck when you are striking out half the time. I say head case. Willy is a head case. He needs some good dreams or maybe for the planet and stars to get aligned properly for him.blackinkbiz wrote: ↑09 Apr 2025 17:50 pmYep, Willy hit about .150 through the first 6-7 weeks of 2023 when Oli had him hitting 5th and I'm pretty sure he was the only player whose batting position didn't change until June. Not sure what it is but he's in love with him and according to him can do no wrong.
Certainly couldn't hurt Goldfan.Goldfan wrote: ↑09 Apr 2025 18:34 pmIt might be as simple as your favorite 2>>>>5 spots argument.
