Contreras does not seem like a very bright guy. He is talented, dedicated & passionate but certain nuances of the game seem to elude him.
And for that reason im not worried about his slow start. Guys like that are immune to prolonged slumps bc they don't let the past linger.

1. Pitchers are increasing their rhythm in delivering pitches. They get the ball from catcher and are ready to deliver. When you are struggling you fall into that rhythm. Probably not the approach Contreras is comfortable.
2. Contreras gets to 0 - 2 very quickly. He knows the next pitch is on outside corner. He is leaning to the point he is heading to the dugout while swinging. It is like the batters box is filled with lava and he wants out. Needs to return to "balance" he is accustomed.
3. Not sure the AB's numbers on his batting in 2 hole, but it is not what he is accustomed. IF you have a competent manager with cajones he would move him to 3 or 5 hole. This group failed horribly with Goldy in 2 hole. Now wants muck up Contreras. If it is Marmot or Elkins making this decision someone needs to intervene and make the changes.
Contreras is very good MLB player. Cardinals are making him look like a A rookie. He needs to be in place where he has been successful.
It isn't the first time he's had a stretch where he looked like he had never been able to hit. Kind of fits the profile you were talking about. Yep, Willy hit about .150 through the first 6-7 weeks of 2023 when Oli had him hitting 5th and I'm pretty sure he was the only player whose batting position didn't change until June. Of course, by then, the season was over. You have to keep him in the lineup, but lower third would be appropriate. Oli has to toughen up and move players down or play someone else for a game when their performance warrants it. And I don't mean a bad series. Maybe that's a thread. How long do you give a vet player before you move him out of the production spots in the lineIp? A dozen games maybe. It depends too. Is he walking any? Is he hitting into bad luck? That ain't Willy. Can't hit into bad luck when you are striking out half the time. I say head case. Willy is a head case.
