Why could this be? This club is 9th in the NL and 8.5 behind the Cubs. Sure, they are now 7-6 against the 2026 Cubs and 3.5 GB of the Wildcard, but let’s not act like the Cardinals didn’t just sell 3 of the last 4 Deadlines.

Even the one they bought sent Tommy Edman to LA for Erick Fedde & Tommy Pham.

I’m stoked they won the series, especially their performance the last 2 Games. They could have a compelling end to the season. That is also exciting. Again, we’re in the middle of August and enthusiasm is tempered.

I went to 2 games last week at Busch III. Both were winners (Colorado 7-4, Phillie 7-1). The stadium was largely empty, and Philadelphia was receiving noticeable cheats early on in that game. This club has a long way to go before they convince the fans to get excited about winning an August series in Chicago.

They’re moving in the right direction. Walker winning the Home Run Derby & Baez having a historic performance certainly helps. However, this club simply needs more positive headlines (JJ ROY, Stud FA Signing), but selling in the offseason and deadlines, and the looming MLB Circus this offseason with the Lockout is a lot to overcome.

Of course its always sweet beating the Cubs especially when it means something.

I mentioned during the game with 5 games in Cincinnati this could be the start of a run with this momentum.
Point taken I suppose. Still, here we are in the middle of a reset, with a winning record and we just beat the "soaring" Cubbies in Wrigley. We didn't just beat them. We pounded them. Our hitting broke out and we did it at Cubbie pitching expense.

I dunno. I'm not above gloating. :D

And like it or not Burleson is the glue for that middle order potential.

Won't go into lengthy slumps, is the veteran of the group although only 27 and has the best bat to ball skills.

And some misinformed folks here still believe he should be traded.
.
Absolutely agree. The sign on the wall has said he's getting better every year. Don't understand anyone not buying into Burley at this juncture.

Yes, beating Boyd and Cabrera at Wrigley was great. However, I thought beating Sanchez (although he didn't take the loss) and Wheeler in PHL was a much bigger accomplishment. This team shows flashes of greatness almost every game. I think about half of the 26-man roster is playoff-ready. Bloom still needs to complete the job he started. This cake is about half-baked. Go Cards!

Can't recall the specific thread but I do remember the subject of which players would surprise and Pallante, Leahy and to a lesser extent Walker wasn't on anyone's list.

Burleson, Wetherholt and Hererra doesn't surprise me.

O'Brien woukd also be on that list with the above mentioned players.

I understand the sentiment.

I just tend to be more wait and see and skeptical.

Take care of business in Cincinnati and things get pretty serious.

A 15 of 20 run would almost guarantee a WC spot.

I have been in Pallante camp. I too am a bit amazed at his growth. Here is a stat reserved only for the greats- he has 24 starts? Ish - just one- 1!!! Didn’t go five innings or more.

Who does that!

To be fair I started a thread back in March saying that Walker was only 23. I made the comparison that a fellow giant with the Yankees (Judge) only hit the majors at 24 by striking out nearly 50% of his at bats and in his 25 year was ROY and MVP2. I argued it was way too early to give up on Walker. I've also been very high on Leahy's stuff and maturity. Pallante was a puzzler because he'd had a good year or two and then 2025 was a bust. I think Pallante did what he had to which was to stick around until he fully crafted his ML stuff...

My wife has been. Entering her 18th year as a HS Math Teacher.

Almost all of the teachers are back to school this week (don’t know if you noticed the traffic change), and the kids start the following week (Mo Law).

This also means daycare is getting an influx this week for those with littles and no in-home support.

It also means people were knocking out their last summer vacations last week. Be it a quick jaunt to the Lake or Branson, Florida, etc. who knows, many may have been at Wrigley with zero rush to post on stltoday…

Some aren’t. Some aren’t happy they spent the offseason whining and crying with doom and gloom predictions that stupid bloom had built a 90-100 loss team when they realized that was a dumb prediction and they were wrong they now shift it to whining and crying and saying that if they spent more money they could be a World Series team lol they have done a complete .180 so they could maintain whining and crying about bloom
Some us, me included, were upset that Bloom didn't do more in the off-season because we believed the team actually had a chance with just a couple more additions. We told by some that those additions would be too costly! The team wasn't ready to add to the payroll. So, if that’s whining and complaining, I’m guilty, but was I wrong?

Still I'd like to bring someone in for a couple of years to add a Real bat to the lineup. One of them can always DH or worst case be Traded if Jesus forces the issue.

I always love beating the cubs, but you have a point, in that ownership hasn't set a tone of expecting to win and then celebrating the wins and then consolidating their MLB gains by saying things like winning isn't the goal. Fans have learned to keep expected a rug pull, so I think a lot of them have checked out until we do more than just surprise very low expectations.
