I agree with this - I honestly wouldn't have minded having Eller on the Blues all these years, he's been solid albeit not spectacular. I think the other most likely parallel is that Otto will probably have that career for another team, since the Blues seem to have blocked him.

Re: Otto Stenberg
To me, he looks like a winger version of Pius Suter. And agree, that he could eventually end up in a trade if needed. And don’t take that as me advocating to trade him. I like what I’ve seen so far, but he also doesn’t seem to be a player that couldn’t be replaced. We’ll see how he develops, but I’m actually higher on the skillset that Pekarcik has shown. Time will tell.Bluesfan1978 wrote: ↑01 Aug 2026 09:55 am I see Otto a lesser offensively talented player but similar in style to Jaden Schwartz. Maybe a 30-40 point version. Maybe its just being hopeful but the way he scored some of his goals during the WJC after he was drafted I could see him scoring a goal or two like that to win a key playoff game or series. He also could end up traded.

Is that still the projection for you all? Anyone see more upside? I’d like to hope so given how talented Ivar is
So no, I don’t see higher upside than that. His younger brother is simply better. But Otto’s still going to be a solid player for us. He doesn’t need to be as good as Ivar to be of value to us.
As for if he’ll make the team out of camp? I’d give him around 50/50 odds. If I had to pencil in the lineup today, I’d say probably not but really only because he’s waiver exempt and we will have a lot of forwards in camp.
Let’s assume the Blues end camp with the usual 14 forwards. I’d say 12 of them are pretty much already spoken for - Thomas, Holloway, Snuggy, McT, McM, Buch, Suter, Dvo, Neighbours, Johnson, Berggren and Torpo.
My guess is Walker and Finley will win the last 2 forward spots. But Stenberg just needs to beat out either of those guys to earn a spot. Or there be an injury in camp and that’d open up a spot too.
Dube and Sundqvist will also be in that same tier battling for the last couple spots too.
I think guys like Kaskimaki, Dean or Peterson would really have to step up to get into that conversation but they’ll be options as well. Kaski probably with the best odds of those 3. But Otto looked notably better than Kaski in the NHL last season so that probably gives him an edge (although Kaski looked better in the AHL).
So simply from a numbers game and the fact he’s waiver exempt would suggest Otto likely starts in Springfield but that’s what camp is for. We’ll just have to see who brings it and who maybe underperforms a bit. There should be a lot of really good battles in camp this year. No free lunch this time around.
But regardless of if Otto is on the roster to start the season, my guess is he plays a majority of this season with the Blues when it’s all said and done.
I hadn’t of Eller as a comp but that’s a solid one as long as the distinction is made that Eller is and was a C all the way and Otto will be a LW. But yeah, that sort of player. We’d be super lucky if Otto had a 1000+ game career like Eller.

Poor man's Jaden Schwartz. He's a puck hound, he's got a great motor, he's smart and can play in a variety of situations. Good comp, Schwartz flashed more offense breaking in at age 20. Stenberg can play in the NHL but to be more than a bottom-6 jag he needs to produce more points.SpacemanSpiff wrote: ↑01 Aug 2026 10:44 amPoor man's Jaden Schwartz. Lindstein: They dropped him into the second pairing with Parayko and he played like a seasoned top-4 vetetan. Project that 17 game production over 82 or 84 games, it was an outstanding showing. Looking forward to seeing much more of him.

Yeah, poor man’s Schwartz would seem about accurate. He’s more of a little shift disturber than Schwartz ever was though. Stenberg got quite the reputation as a guy that wouldn’t ever stop yapping and trying to get under the skin of the opposing team’s best players in the SHL. Can’t say if that’s continued here but my guess is even if it hasn’t, he’ll likely get back to that once he establishes himself here more.SpacemanSpiff wrote: ↑01 Aug 2026 10:44 amPoor man's Jaden Schwartz. And good point on the +/-. A lot of that can probably be attributed to the Blues giving both of them relatively sheltered minutes (although there’s no “easy” minutes in the NHL) but also shows that they’re both good defensively, especially for their age. Neither will be the sort of player that’ll bring you to the edge of your seat but will very likely be players where the team consistently outperforms the opposition when they’re out there. Lowish event hockey but successful hockey.

Eller was a huge part of the Caps' Cup win in 2018. He was a bottom-six center- often on the fourth line IIRC, but a string of injuries decimated the Capitals centers, and he wound up as the 2C and played like a Champ until they were the Champs.
Eller is, as you pointed out, a Center and is a few inches and a few pounds ahead in size.
However, Otto, I reckon it's because he is a winger, plays a more physical game than Lars. He projects to about 50% more hits a season.

Re: Otto Stenberg
I thought Stenberg was one of the best players on Team Sweden at the 2025 World Juniors. That doesn’t guarantee success at the NHL level but it sure made me more optimistic about his ultimate potential. No reason he can’t be a very good 3rd line winger, with the ability to play up on the second line once he gets a little experience.

Re: Otto Stenberg
The clock has run out for him on the Blues. If he had more NHL games played at his age and more with significantly higher NHL production, then possibly he would be a fit. He's going to be that Veteran guy for balance with younger prospects in Springfield, or maybe traded to another team if he clears waivers. We've a lot in the system at the Left-Wing position.

Re: Otto Stenberg
Not a chance.
Building from within was only a sells tag to get him another day. Once that day became another yesterday. Youths went back to getting more seasoning.
We spent a year sucking all the offensive abilities out of Otto. So he could grind the bottom six. Then he went out and hired more grinders to fill the bottom two lines.

I think there is a good chance Dude is a 40 or maybe even 50 point NHL player...which is probably not good enough for a top 9 LW NHL spot on the Blues but would probably be a huge contributor on a cash strapped team with top heavy talentOld_Goat wrote: ↑01 Aug 2026 15:23 pmThe clock has run out for him on the Blues.
