I agree with this - I honestly wouldn't have minded having Eller on the Blues all these years, he's been solid albeit not spectacular. I think the other most likely parallel is that Otto will probably have that career for another team, since the Blues seem to have blocked him.

He also could end up traded.
To me, he looks like a winger version of Pius Suter. And agree, that he could eventually end up in a trade if needed. And don’t take that as me advocating to trade him. I like what I’ve seen so far, but he also doesn’t seem to be a player that couldn’t be replaced. We’ll see how he develops, but I’m actually higher on the skillset that Pekarcik has shown. Time will tell.

Post draft he was viewed as a reliable middle six guy with good IQ, decent skill, and that’s pretty much how I still view him

Is that still the projection for you all? Anyone see more upside? I’d like to hope so given how talented Ivar is
I still see him as a likely middle-6 Swiss Army knife type. He won’t be a main needle mover in terms of offense but one of those solid middle of the lineup players that does all the little things well that helps a team win.

So no, I don’t see higher upside than that. His younger brother is simply better. But Otto’s still going to be a solid player for us. He doesn’t need to be as good as Ivar to be of value to us.

As for if he’ll make the team out of camp? I’d give him around 50/50 odds. If I had to pencil in the lineup today, I’d say probably not but really only because he’s waiver exempt and we will have a lot of forwards in camp.

Let’s assume the Blues end camp with the usual 14 forwards. I’d say 12 of them are pretty much already spoken for - Thomas, Holloway, Snuggy, McT, McM, Buch, Suter, Dvo, Neighbours, Johnson, Berggren and Torpo.

My guess is Walker and Finley will win the last 2 forward spots. But Stenberg just needs to beat out either of those guys to earn a spot. Or there be an injury in camp and that’d open up a spot too.

Dube and Sundqvist will also be in that same tier battling for the last couple spots too.

I think guys like Kaskimaki, Dean or Peterson would really have to step up to get into that conversation but they’ll be options as well. Kaski probably with the best odds of those 3. But Otto looked notably better than Kaski in the NHL last season so that probably gives him an edge (although Kaski looked better in the AHL).

So simply from a numbers game and the fact he’s waiver exempt would suggest Otto likely starts in Springfield but that’s what camp is for. We’ll just have to see who brings it and who maybe underperforms a bit. There should be a lot of really good battles in camp this year. No free lunch this time around.

But regardless of if Otto is on the roster to start the season, my guess is he plays a majority of this season with the Blues when it’s all said and done.
In the limited time with the Blues Otto has shown the dog on a bone tenacity he gets in on for checks and battles well this is what is going to get him ice time. Monty wants battlers on his roster. Idk is he a quicker vs of Schwartzy ? Otto will eventually slide in well with Holloway and Neighbours however the lines shake out it also wouldn't surprise me to see him score some gola sooner than later
He doesn’t have the offensive talent as Schwartz. At least not prime Schwartz. He’s probably pretty comfortable to what Schwartz is now though.

I hadn’t of Eller as a comp but that’s a solid one as long as the distinction is made that Eller is and was a C all the way and Otto will be a LW. But yeah, that sort of player. We’d be super lucky if Otto had a 1000+ game career like Eller.

Poor man's Jaden Schwartz. He's a puck hound, he's got a great motor, he's smart and can play in a variety of situations. He's just not a 30 goal scorer.

He'll probably be the first call up to the Blues and he'll solidify his spot, probably hit 50 games and around 20 points.

Interesting fact - although it's a small sample size, he and Lindstein (another young player some are wringing their hands about) were plus players last season, and the Blues only had 10 plus players.

Good comp, Schwartz flashed more offense breaking in at age 20. Stenberg can play in the NHL but to be more than a bottom-6 jag he needs to produce more points.

Lindstein: They dropped him into the second pairing with Parayko and he played like a seasoned top-4 vetetan. Project that 17 game production over 82 or 84 games, it was an outstanding showing. Looking forward to seeing much more of him.

I like that summation/prediction on the roster MN. It's just about impossible to nail all of this down right now but that's a good guess on how the roster will go with all these moving parts.

But it almost screams a trade before the season starts to go quality over quantity and still have the depth in place.

Maybe. If such a trade materializes. My guess is it doesn’t and we enter camp with pretty much exactly the same group of players we have today.

Let the record show that Ive been confusing both of you over the years because of the similarities in your nicks, but I really got a temporary OCD shock seeing both of your nicks together

Yeah, poor man’s Schwartz would seem about accurate. He’s more of a little shift disturber than Schwartz ever was though. Stenberg got quite the reputation as a guy that wouldn’t ever stop yapping and trying to get under the skin of the opposing team’s best players in the SHL. Can’t say if that’s continued here but my guess is even if it hasn’t, he’ll likely get back to that once he establishes himself here more.

And good point on the +/-. A lot of that can probably be attributed to the Blues giving both of them relatively sheltered minutes (although there’s no “easy” minutes in the NHL) but also shows that they’re both good defensively, especially for their age. Neither will be the sort of player that’ll bring you to the edge of your seat but will very likely be players where the team consistently outperforms the opposition when they’re out there. Lowish event hockey but successful hockey.

Eller was a huge part of the Caps' Cup win in 2018. He was a bottom-six center- often on the fourth line IIRC, but a string of injuries decimated the Capitals centers, and he wound up as the 2C and played like a Champ until they were the Champs.
Eller is, as you pointed out, a Center and is a few inches and a few pounds ahead in size.
However, Otto, I reckon it's because he is a winger, plays a more physical game than Lars. He projects to about 50% more hits a season.

I thought Stenberg was one of the best players on Team Sweden at the 2025 World Juniors. That doesn’t guarantee success at the NHL level but it sure made me more optimistic about his ultimate potential. No reason he can’t be a very good 3rd line winger, with the ability to play up on the second line once he gets a little experience.

The clock has run out for him on the Blues. If he had more NHL games played at his age and more with significantly higher NHL production, then possibly he would be a fit. He's going to be that Veteran guy for balance with younger prospects in Springfield, or maybe traded to another team if he clears waivers. We've a lot in the system at the Left-Wing position.

Not a chance.
Building from within was only a sells tag to get him another day. Once that day became another yesterday. Youths went back to getting more seasoning.

We spent a year sucking all the offensive abilities out of Otto. So he could grind the bottom six. Then he went out and hired more grinders to fill the bottom two lines.

I think there is a good chance Dude is a 40 or maybe even 50 point NHL player...which is probably not good enough for a top 9 LW NHL spot on the Blues but would probably be a huge contributor on a cash strapped team with top heavy talent
