Whatashame wrote: 26 Jul 2026 17:58 pm The problem (if it is a problem) with Burleson is we view/use him as our best hitter or best RBI guy. We shouldn’t be moving him but adding on to him. What we need is a true MOTO hitter, then we could use Burleson where he needs to be. What if we hit Burly second or could afford to hit him fifth or sixth in the order where he truly should be.

We are asking Burleson to carry a lot of the water for us, Walker too. I’m not dragging them down but trying to help them. Add a true MOTO bat to this lineup, lengthen it some, and I believe it would help both Burleson and Walker. I’m grateful that both of these guys are going to flirt with 100 RBIs this year but help these two by lengthening the order.

Lastly, let’s get over platooning Burleson. I know he has had some struggles with LHP but let him work that out. He’s a pure hitter and he will make adjustments. Sitting him against LHP just feeds into the idea that he can’t hit lefties.
Well he can’t hit LHP’s. It’s not a matter of wishing it on him, it’s just a fact that in his career so far he has not been good vs LHP.

Since he became a regular in 2023, Burleson has a .571 OPS vs LHP over 427 PA. Out of the 366 players with at least 200 PA vs LHP during that time, his OPS is the 20th lowest. He is the only player in the lowest 30 with at least 400 PA. Most of the ones worse than him are half the PAs So one could say he’s already been used too much.

Shouldn't wrap up a hitter who cant hit lefties
Hes 5th in the majors in RBI, and has been hitting lefties pretty good as of late. You dont think they can use that kind of offense?
Because of his present life BA vs lefties NOW is the time to extend him. Get the bargain price before he figures lefties completely. Similar to why I was preaching to extend Waljer LAST year. Just had too much potential and would have come cheap.
Sometimes you have to have foresight and take the risk.
I mean he came in to today with a .493 OPS vs LHP’s. That’s only 50 points higher than it was at its low I think, and that is an incredibly low bar to set. He’s still abysmal vs LHP’s.
And hes still one of the best run producers in the entire MLB. Do you throw that away because he doesn't hit LH as well as RH pitching? Ill take the run production over OPS every day.
His ops is over 800. That is considered pretty good. He is also driving in runs. Can we stop with this nonsense where we act like he is barely above average.

Recency bias of a couple of hits vs LH pitching doesn't change that he's a defensive liability and doesn't hit lefties. He's aged out for the Cards moving forward
I just don't understand why people can't see this. His age, years of control, and the way he will likely decline based on his skill set, mean he will not be with the team when their competitive window is open. What am I missing?

The thought process, there are a lot of other players who could have the same run production. Meaning the run production is a result of both him getting hits and players in front of him getting into scoring position.

He’s not barely above average in any way. He’s way above average vs RHP and way below average vs LHP. It’s honestly amazing that his OPS is only barely above .800 when his OPS vs RHP is .952. When a player is nearing 1.000 OPS vs the types of pitchers that they see 75% of the time, they shouldn’t even be below .900, much less nearing .800.

It’s not about “wishing” it on him. I guess you’re convinced he can’t hit LH pitching but I’m not. If he has 400 PA since 2023 that’s about 100 a year. Let him see LH pitching regularly and let him adjust. If you have better options I’d think about it but sitting Burleson so we can give more ABs to Saggese, to Pages, to Fermin just doesn’t seem like a good idea. Dropping him behind Winn because Winn is RH just doesn’t seem like a good idea. Maybe we let Burleson try to work through it. Most lefties hit RH pitching better than lefties, mostly because they have seen them more because there are more of them.

If you want to give him a day off against a Chris Sale, I get it but against a guy like Abbott, let him play.

He was ok against LHP last year, but it’s looking like more of an aberration than anything given his struggles this year. I’d be willing to play him if they dropped him in the order. I’d consider flipping him and Jordan depending on RH/LH pitcher. I think they are similar kind of hitters and could excel at that.

If he was OK against LH pitching last year but
has struggled this year, maybe it’s more of an anomaly than anything else. I’m definitely not willing to just platoon him. Marmol has taken recently to moving him down against lefties but our options against LH pitching just aren’t much. You can play Torres, Nootbaar or Church but they’re also lefties. Playing Saggese or Pages or even Velasquez against lefties because you don’t like Burleson against them just seems detrimental. If Burleson has hit them in the past he has a chance to hit them again.

There’s always been the Sale, the Carlton, the Randy Johnson, the Hader who are a snootful against everyone, especially lefties but the Abbott, the Liberatore, the Drohan just let him learn to have better ABs against them.

I like him as a player but it seems his age is sort of an issue. He might should be traded.
You have made the most relevant post in this thread.
He will be a FA in just 2 years.
And will be 29 years old.
It will be the most advantageous moment in his career to seek a payday on the open market.
There will never be a better opportunity for him.
There is zero upside for him to discuss an extension with STL.

Don’t need to extend him. Or trade him. Just enjoy him for 2 more years.

He’s pretty good. But he’s a 2-2.5 WAR first baseman. Not that hard to replace.
