Re: Waste pitches and a game foolishly given away.
Hi fellas, Riles here. I didn't watch or listen to the game, but when I kept asking SIRI "What's the score of the Cardinal game?" and she was taking 5 minutes to update, I started to get that old, familiar sick feeling. Sure enough, game tying 2 out bomb. I knew right then it was over and went back to installing brake pads for our youngest. Didn't check until after I had finished, and of course, the end result was just what we all expected. Nice to see that Melville and all of you terrific baseball men are spot on. Yes, waste pitches that are not even competitive serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever. And I'm glad I didn't put on the radio to hear our announcer saying "The Padres are down to their final strike, like somebody going up to our starter after the 5th to tell him he's got a perfect game going. STAY AGGRESSIVE IN THE STRIKE ZONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just like Gibby and our favorite pitchers would have.
Anyway, it doesn't really bother me that much anymore cuz of the universal DH. But I am glad that we're playing much better than most people thought we would. And I'm REALLY happy that Jordan Walker is living up to his potential as a 5 tool player. He seems like a fine young man, with a great attitude that has worked his (donkey) off. Maybe I'll even come down and check out a few games this summer. Hope everybody's doing well and all our mothers and wives had a happy mother's day.

I wasn't watching the game but was following on the MLB live feed. Seemed like O’Brien was super sharp. One strike away from winning. Looks like fantastic pitches that were hit.
Multiple sweepers more than a foot outside the zone is not sharp.
And stupidly throwing it multiple times - badly missing every time - in put-away counts was nonsensical.
I told my wife if he went to a 3-2 count, he would lose the game.
He did.
And he did.
You simply never put a .192 hitter in a spot where every single person watching knows the next pitch is going to be a straight FB in the middle of the zone.
Unbelievably stupid to intentionally waste pitches and give the hitter a huge advantage in that game situation.

Before the series I would have gladly signed up for a split.
Unfortunately after taking the first two they clearly should have at least taken 3 of 4 or even swept!
As for your comment about CT after a loss?
I’ve often said that if Freud were alive today he could easily fill a 3 volume set just following this forum. LOL

Re: Waste pitches and a game foolishly given away.
I agree. It's one thing to be 0-2 and have a wasted pitch. 1-2 is another story. (like you said you are just one wasted pitch and a close miss from losing your advantage as a pitcher).spfldan wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:36 pm agree here Mel. Waste pitches well outside the zone don't accomplish anything. Umpired amature basball at many levels for years. Typical pattern for young pitches and amature coaches on 1/2 counts was, first a not close, totallly wasted pitch for (2/2), then miss closely (3/2), yell at me for not getting the call, get mad and overthrow the fastball for ball 4. Happend a lot. Unless a good control pitcher can miss the zone with an enticing enough pitch to get the batter to chase, the wasted pitch is just that- wasted.
An experienced hitter may recognize that a 'get them to get themselves out' pitch and lay off it. If they do, you are at 2-2 and are just one like you said one 'close but don't get the call from being 3-2.
Once it is 3-2, any advantage you had is gone. Like you said, if the pitcher doesn't retain his composure that's a disaster waiting to happen. At which case, you may be better just walking the better and setting up the forceout, especially with 2 outs.
Anyway, at 3-2
* A batter may shorten their swing to increase the chances of making enough contact to foul pitches off.
* The batter is in jeopardy of striking out still, but the pitcher has no room for error with a decent hitter. The pitcher is force to throw a strike or risk walking the batter. The batter knows this and will tend to look for a strike in the zone (a potentially more hittable pitch).
This is why when Matt Carpenter was on, he was so dangerous. He would work the count (which as you indicated, the pitcher would help him on it) and then often keep off fouling off pitches until he got one he liked.

Exactly. Give the hitter some credit. The pitch he clouted was 98 up and on the inside corner. That is not a meatball by any stretch.Galatians221jb1 wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:59 pm https://x.com/stl_stats_facts/status/20 ... 40310?s=46

Re: Waste pitches and a game foolishly given away.
At that point, with 2 outs, he should have just walked him or at least not given him anything great to hit. He can't beat you with a 2 run walk. You could feel the game in the balance there. Technically they didn't win it until the 10th. But, let's face it with the hitting lacking today, if the Padres got to the bottom of the 10th still tied, it puts the odds in their favor with a man on 2nd to start the inning (which I think is a stupid rule).Melville wrote: ↑10 May 2026 20:06 pmHe was not.Galatians221jb1 wrote: ↑10 May 2026 18:59 pm https://x.com/stl_stats_facts/status/20 ... 40310?s=46

I find it VERY hard to believe that they intentionally called for the pitches to be 2 foot outside. The more you tack on to this thread, your points are getting more outrageous. The guy hit an HR. Give him credit. Walker hit one earlier. Pitchers fault? Or props to Walker. Intentionally calling 2 pitches a foot or more outside the zone, thereby putting a .192 hitter in a gift full count situation in which he knew, and every person in the stadium knew, and every person watching on television knew, was going to be a belt high fastball on the inner half, is stupidity on steroids.
And then they did it again in the 10th.
This stuff ain't hard.

Throwing three consecutive straight fastballs - to a fastball hitter - because you have intentionally wasted multiple non-competitive pitches, the last of which is belt high and on the inner half where it can be easily turned on, is pretty much the definition of a meatball.icon wrote: ↑10 May 2026 20:24 pmExactly. That is the definition of being in the middle of his zone.
