If you had said Jordan over Leo maybe there is a point. Marty Supreme is a solid movie about a tortured ping pong player. Are we honoring people because they learn how to play ping pong? He did a fine job and the dude is a hell of an actor.
I thought MBJ's acting in Sinners was off the hook. Even with modern technology the ability to play both sides of identical twins is really incredible to me. He made that story work so well. I have zero complaints with him winning.
I suppose this is another reason why all of this is so subjective. You see Timothy as the clear cut winner. I saw it as more of a two horse race between MBJ and Leo. To each their own.

Timmy's such a try-hard... chill dude and stop basing your career choices around Oscar bait. Still hasn't given a better performance than Call Me By Your Name.

If you play 2 sides of a character but the acting is bad B movie acting then is it still a good performance?? Sinners is possibly the most overrated garbage ive ever seen. Its the quality of a soft core cinemax movie. The internet culture hate machine is so predictable. Constantly tearing down your idols. Because he made an accurate comment that ballet and opera suck? Hop on the bandwagon before its too full.George Zipp wrote: ↑17 Mar 2026 09:25 amIf you had said Jordan over Leo maybe there is a point. Well I disagree with your review of Sinners. Again, it's a subjective topic and to each their own. I will say if you think Sinners is on par with a 1997 late night Cinemax movie starring Kim Dawson (yep, I know these things) then perhaps you don't really know as much about movies as I want to give you credit for. That's a rather silly take.Jeff Goldblum wrote: ↑17 Mar 2026 10:47 amIf you play 2 sides of a character but the acting is bad B movie acting then is it still a good performance?? As for Timmy's comments about ballet and opera I'm about 98% sure they were made after the voting was tallied and had zero to do with the award. I also agree with 3dender that Chamalet is chasing Oscars. It's his right. Many actors do it. I'm guessing eventually he will get one. Might be next year for Dune 3. Might be in 2067. For now he will have to suffer with being a gazillonaire who gets unlimited work and is banging the hottest of the Kardashians (again subjective). Thoughts and prayers to him.

Acting was awful. Sound was awful. Background music was softcore porn music. Writing was awful. Lighting was awful. Production was awful. The only thing that was decent about it was the premise.
As for marty supreme, it wasn't the best movie ever. Way too long. But his performance was head and shoulders above Jordan's. Weak year for best actor. No Daniel plainview in sight.

It's funny cause if you see the context of his ballet/opera quote, and his past quotes about ballet/opera, it becomes clear he actually has more respect for them as artforms than most other people of his generation. All he was saying is that he doesn't want film to lose its mass appeal like those artforms have.George Zipp wrote: ↑17 Mar 2026 11:23 amWell I disagree with your review of Sinners. A much bigger factor in his new villainry is just him being arrogant. In multiple interviews since the Bob Dylan movie he's been talking about an Oscar like it's a foregone conclusion, like he's owed it and nobody else even comes close. It's pretty cringe and offputting. Look at minute 13 of this interview from a couple months ago. He not only literally believes there's no way he won't win an Oscar, but he comes out and says it. Super out of touch with reality (where other really talented actors exist and put in elite performances every year) as well as disrespectful to his colleagues. And he's been acting that way for over 2 years now. No wonder people are turning against him.

Re: Th’ Academy - your prefs
I was not the biggest fan of Sinners, you can go back to the post in the topic and see that, it tried way too hard to be 3 movies in 1...and should have just stuck with the mobster movie with a hint of vampires, but the last part was so rushed. Anyways, I think Jordan did really good, but I don't have a dog in the fight because I have not seen Marty Supreme. Leo, IMO, is always good, but he seemed to be an afterthought for best actor because the expectations for him are always so high. I think Benicio del Toro should have won just for his "I've had a few small beers" line.
Weapons was my favorite movie I went and saw in the theater in the last year-ish. I loved it. Amy Madigan was in it, what, 15 minutes? But she won which honestly I am fine with, even though personally I would have given it to Teyana Taylor who was fantastic (and also is a smoke show) in One Battle After Another.
But yeah, I am fine with Jordan winning, and Texas4Ever.

Without Jeff’s perhaps vehemence, I also rate Sinners as fairly wildly over-rated. Actually tedious until the vampires got things cracking. They, particularly the leader, were fantabulous.
Thought the blues music was so-so - why not dub in BG or even better RJ, CP, or some other genwine delta player who can actually deal. The folk side, otoh, rather beautiful & compelling.
Now here’s the main beef, and put into your frame of reference Jordan Peele’s use of horror tropes. There’s a point to it, and no great stretch to see. What were the ravenous snarky troupe here in service of ? It was not much than a B+ monster movie in an interesting, largely cliched, historical setting. I’m fully prepared to be challenged on this, have no problem with it.
As far as this being a weak year for actors, au contraire mes freres. DiCaprio, Svarsgaard, Penn, Del Toro, Jordan, Moira, just the ones I’ve seen. A (bleep) good year for film generally. And I still have Train Dreams and Bugonia, at least, to see. Laslly, it peeves me to see/hear on the cultural elite front side-eye at OBAA and PTA’s FINALLY getting an Oscar (because he ‘deprived’ monster movie guy, I guess). The man is an absolute master. There, said it all, I’m spent. And boy, do I feel better.
