That game is a memory frozen in time. A life-altering inspirational shock to the system, enhanced by the international and domestic backdrop.

Speaking of the 80 Olympics and Ken Dryden...

Al Michaels was on with Rich Eisen recently, following Ken's passing. He shared the story about Ken driving to Ottawa between games to write - and pass - the bar exam. He then drove back to Lake Placid to work the Russia game.

Check out the new drop on Netflix...Miracle - Boys of 80. Predominantly player focused with Brooks' kids filling in the blanks there.

Lots of backstories straight from the players' mouths. And in the end, a wish to have connected with their coach. Which never materialized. Also a great story about Eruzione's uncle that will leave a mark.

Enjoy.
I was fortunate enough to see the 1980 Olympic team play the Blues in September 1979 in Des Moines.
It was in a tiny rink surrounded by bleachers.
I didn’t pay much attention to the Olympic team.
It was also the first time I saw the Blues live living here in Iowa.
It was a great experience that I’ll never forget.
I remember thinking how old some of the players looked.
Bernie Ferderko was a young stud at that time.
As the players were leaving the ice, we yelled Bernie’s name.
He got out of the line, straightened his Jersey, and let us take a picture of him.
Wow that is so cool. I played at that rink a few times in the mid 80s. I can imagine how cool it would have been to see a pro game there
Awesome, Iowa. Never met Bernie, other than seeing him at my local gas station. Funny - you talk about how old those players looked back then. Bernie doesn't seem to age! 8O

Great story.
Bernie was the 'overseer' for our group for the Viper tryouts.. our scrimmage ended 2-2 and I had 2 assists (forced to play D because we didn't have 6 guys that could skate backwards lol )
at the end we gathered at the bench for a 'pep' talk and he gave me a smile and a wink (prolly cause I had 2 good hits in that scrimmage as well lol )

good times and seemed like a really good dude

Bernie in the Stan Musial of the Blues. He was such a great player. He retired a young man and before his time. I hated that we traded him to Detroit, but the trade worked out so well for St. Louis getting Adam Oates. Tough decision between loyalty and business.

hockey jedi wrote: 30 Jan 2026 23:29 pm Absolutely phenomenal. I've seen every movie and documentary about that team. This was the best I've seen. I wish they would create a DVD set of all the games. It's a bummer that Pav is gone, but also Ken Dryden, Mark Wells, Bob Suter and Herb. I was neighbors with a retired dentist who is friends with and hunts with Bill Baker, who is a retired oral surgeon. He says Bill is a great guy. Thanks for letting us know about this JC.

Another cool movie is Red Army. Slava Festisov talks about the game and brings his smoking hot daughter back to Lake Placid to show her around. I remember as a kid hating Russia because of invading Afghanistan and just being scared of them. However, I always liked and respected the hockey team.
Fantastic movie! Not that long. And a tremendous way for those unfamiliar with the Soviet Union and history to learn its reality. When it came out, the only theatre that had it was at Frontenac Plaza (a great little theatre by the way that shows excellent movies that don't ordinarily fit the "Hollywood" interests' blockbuster genre)... it was close by my office, so I went over one weekday afternoon to watch it. I was the only person in the theatre, and I loved the movie. The saddest part was to see the devastatingly sick, trembling, emotionally disturbed condition of Vladimir Krutov -- a result of the hopelessness, depression and alcoholic condition that was so prevalent under the deprivation of those Totalitarians. He died relatively young of liver failure when he was 52. The best part was really driving home the understanding of the 5-man unit of play as well as the training to achieve that.

Red Army was available for purchase on Fandango. I own it, but I am not sure if it is still available for purchase or rental.

Heartbreaking for me! Seeing those guys that old, what does that say about us! lol
