Matheny mentored Molina who I would consider a star. That firing still makes no sense to me.
Ironically, I bet it made perfect sense to Molina…
His public comments indicated otherwise.
The org was done w MM.
And so is every other org in baseball.
A brain hemorrhage will do that. Meanwhile you fabricated the part about Molina disliking Matheny.
I don’t think YM disliked MM. I think he was done with him as a manager.
I also think the ‘Matheny mentored Molina!” is a little overblown.
Freakin’ molina had two brothers who were mlb catchers, WS champions, with Bengi winning two GGs.
This insinuation that Molina was some rough lump of clay that Metheny sculpted in 2004 is laughable. Molina probably could’ve started on the 2004 team and everything would’ve worked out just fine.
I have no idea of the relationship between Molina and Matheny, but here is something that has been said:
At one point in that extended spring training, instructor Dave Ricketts observed Molina from a golf cart during a game. Molina allowed a passed ball through his legs with a runner on third base, and raced to the backstop to retrieve the ball. Still hoping to prevent the runner from scoring, he instead found Ricketts in the golf cart parked on top of home plate. Ricketts, who had a reputation for becoming upset when minor league catchers allowed balls to bounce between their legs, removed Molina from the game and drove him to the batting cage. There, Molina later recalled, Ricketts batted 150 to 200 ground balls to improve the young catcher's ability to block pitches.

Molina did have brothers who were catchers but he was Matheny's backup in 2004 and Matheny won the gold glove that season. Molina's comments after Matheny was fired indicated he wasn't happy about it.

To really even have a chance of competing with the best teams right now, the Cardinals probably need to develop from their minor league system:
(1) an All-Star level, 5+ fWAR position player, and
(2) an All-Star level, 4+ fWAR, front of rotation SP
and have them be in their cost controlled years, along with other, lesser players in their cost controlled years, so they can afford to build a roster around them.
Hopefully Wetherholt and Doyle turn out to be those guys.
Everyone was hoping the same for that whole long list of busts and many more. They need to add some proven talent and a legitimate manager or all we’ll ever have is the next great wishlist of the future.

Cardinal fans have been disappointed in the recent past with Dylan Carlson , Walker , and others who have not become top MLB players.
There was a lot of hope and anticipation but then fizzled. Due to that , many fans have the mindset that any youngsters being considered for promotion to the big league now is 'over-hyped or 'rushed' .
When St. Louis does 'hit' on a young guy who becomes a budding star at a young age, fans will be more willing to accept the next young guy promotion.
Will JJ Wetherholt be that guy ? possibly . If he plays very well, that may open the door for a Doyle, Rodrigues, and Padilla types to advance on a fast track possibly.
Our division rival had a teenager coming up thru their minors .. Brewers Jackson Chourio .. After playing well in Double A Biloxi at age 19, he was brought up in 2024 at age 20. Chourio finished his rookie year making the 20/20 club (HR's + SB) . He was 3rd place Rookie of the Year.
Last year , he duplicated the 20/20 club once again. Currently , the Brewers No. 1 prospect is an 18 year old IF Jesus Made Made is ranked 4th in the Top 100 on MLB (one slot ahead of JJ ). Made is not slated to be promoted but knocking on the door . Might be with Brewers big club at age 19 .
After seeing Chourio blossoming , Brewer fans are not hesitant to see Made sooner rather than later. The fans also had a history with a 18 year old starter at SS .. Robin Yount went on to be Hall of Famer So hoping one of these youngsters for the Cardinals 'hits' soon for our team. That will relax some of the fans about the over-hype talk , etc. Until someone breaks thru , fans will be leary fearing another youngster bites the dust. Many in the fanbase are nervous and worried about playing a young guy . Maybe our luck will soon change.
Cardinals are way overdue for a young budding star . Go Cardinals !
That’s what happens when mo destroys the development system.
Seems like the opposite problem to me. They are developing these guys (except hence) up TO the major leagues and they show some initial success and promise, then they go backwards. Seems like that’s on Oli and his coaches at the ML level and they are Still here.
