Roland played for Mizzou in early 60's and was great. I remember Roland in the '65 Orange Bowl where he helped Mizzou take down Steve Spurrier and the Florida Gators. Roland later played in NFL for the "Gird Birds" and was a NFL running backs coach for several NFL teams.
As for Wilder, I will never forget him "taking down" the Cornhuskers in 1978 game scoring four touchdowns in 35 -31 win.
He wasn't nicknamed the "Sikeston Bulldog" for nothing. The man was a "beast".

Actually, his nickname wasn’t the Sikeston Bulldog, it was the Sikeston Train.straight out of st louis robert ave wrote: ↑05 Dec 2025 21:20 pm He wasn't nicknamed the "Sikeston Bulldog" for nothing. The man was a "beast".
"The Sikeston Train" was James Wilder, a dominant NFL running back in the 1980s known for his incredible durability and workhorse performance, especially with the Buccaneers.

Growing up in St Louis, I use to listen to Cards games on the radio listening to Caray and Buck.
My dad also liked Missouri and we saw a few games on TV. Back in those days, there was no ESPN
I started rooting for Mizzou in late 50's and early '60s and my favorite players was first Dan LaRose and then Johnny Roland.
Roland was my favorite all time Mizzou player and James Wilder was my second.
You can condemn me for a few mistaken facts but I have been a Mizzou fan for 65 yrs and I never miss watching a football or basketball game.
I am proud of the fact that I have rooted for the Cardinals and Mizzou all my life.
And I am proud of the fact I grew up in South St Louis. (River Des Peres)
I was able to witness what a great city St louis was in the '50s, 60s and 70s.
I don't know what happened to St Louis today but it was a great city when I was growing up.
Re: Was James Wilder The Last MU RB
It wasn’t so much you were wrong, it’s that you doubled and tripled down. That 1965 team was really the first Mizzou team I followed (been hooked ever since), primarily because what 7 year old WOULDN’T be seduced by a team who’s #1 RB was named Charlie Brown? FWIW, Roland was an All-American DB and short yardage RB that year (though he DID throw a TD pass in that Sugar Bowl game.)

I know the story of Roland.Red7 wrote: ↑06 Dec 2025 11:40 am It wasn’t so much you were wrong, it’s that you doubled and tripled down. You don't have to remind me.
I knew Roland play DB but my memories of Roland is as a running back.
Roland was a star running back in 62 and that is the guy I remember.
As it turned out, he could do a lot things on offense and defense.
Red - you just like to condemn and belittle. Admit it!

Florida makes on think of the Orange Bowl. New Orleans makes one think of the Sugar Bowl.Red7 wrote: ↑06 Dec 2025 07:32 amTry doing just a TAD of research. 01/01/66 - Mizzou 20; Florida 18 @New Orleans Sugar Bowl ('65 season) {before the game Mizzou was ranked #6 and Florida was unranked}
01/02/66 - Alabama 39; Nebraska 28 @Miami Orange Bowl ('65 season) {before the game Alabama was ranked #4 and Nebraska #3. It should be noted that earlier in the day #1 Michigan State lost the Rose Bowl game to #5 UCLA and #2 Arkansas lost in the Cotton Bowl game to LSU.
So New Year's day the #1, #2 and #3 teams all lost that year.
An easy bet to make in the old day (when the big bowls were always on New Years Day) was to make a bet on "who would win this years Rose/Orange/Sugar Bowl" on a couple of days before the bowl game. Keep in mind, the "winner" was determined almost a year previous.
