And DeWitt really needs to OK the money to sign that pitcher. Or maybe Bloom can get one in a trade. Probably, trading Donovan is the only possibility that route. Maybe a Contreras trade could. With Liberatore, McGreevy and Fitts, the Cardinals now have three pretty good #3 type starting pitchers. But that's not going to move the needle much from last season. If this scenario plays out, the Cardinals might surprise some people next season.
I don't think anybody we have on the trade block can bring that return
You are probably right.
That's why DeWitt needs to shell out some cash for a quality FA starting pitcher to help make this team more competitive next season. And get more fans back in the stadium.
They just traded away a legit “quality #2 type starting pitcher” (plus $20mm) for prospects. What does that tell you?
For the umpteenth time: They. Aren’t. Focused. On. Being. Competitive. Next. Season.
"They just traded away a legit “quality #2 type starting pitcher” (plus $20mm) for prospects. What does that tell you?" That they are dumping salary, Stooge.

So if you acknowledge they are "dumping salary" by trading away a "quality #2 type starting pitcher" (and $20mm cash) for future prospects, then why do you think they would then turn around and focus on
acquiring a "quality #2 type starting pitcher" in free agency in order to be competitive next season? Do you seriously think signing a "#2 type FA starting pitcher"
wouldn't add significant salary?
You can't even keep your story straight . . . But here's some attention, since we all know that is the
*real* topic and purpose of this typically repetitive, inane thread.

Man, you seem to be yearning for some kind of twisted validation. But you are a joke. You seldom offer anything but ridicule to others. Happy Thanksgiving anyway.

Confirms your contrite disposition. But you do motivate me.

You have impressive bumping ability. That's about all you offer. I'm done with your nonsense.

No, the Cards have 3 very good 5 starters 3 okay to good number 4 starters...none of them are top 3 starters in a good roation.

I can see the Cards signing a veteran pitcher like Quintana to a one year deal and or sign a FA pitcher like Tyler Mahler. In addition to some veteran bullpen help.

It will be interesting to see what bloom does with the rotation. He’s absolutely going to sign at least one free agent starter in my opinion the only question is will he play it safe and sign mediocre pitchers like mo did and go with a leake Gibson and Lynn addition who aren’t going to help you win anything just keep you in mediocrity or will he gamble and go with a high upside injured pitcher like beuhler? I’m hoping he gambles

A lot of rebuilding teams will sign bargain vets on short term deals to cover innings and hopefully catch lightning in a bottle so you can trade them to s contender for prospects at the deadline. Would not surprise me at all to see Bloom do that. Would be a smart play.

I'd say an older veteran and a late 20s to early 30s is the hope.

I doubt it, but it would be fun in a season that doesn't promise a whole lot otherwise.

If the Cardinals would simply execute your brilliant proposal of Walker for Bubba Chandler they would have that guy. Get to it, Bloom. And if that's what Walker would return I'd like to go a step further and swap Burleson for Skenes. Rotation solved, easy peasy.

A couple guys named Gallen and Alcantara might fit that description.

unfortunately, we will not be competitive next year and attendance will be down (unless those who have been begging for a tank show up in droves)

"Bargain" and "#2 type FA starting pitcher" don't go together.
Any #2 is not got be a FA bargain.
Think mid $20+M AAV and multiple years.

Dumping salary to spend the money elsewhere. While adding some younger players.

Finding a "bargain" #2 type FA starting pitcher is like this 1963 hit record title:
