I’m not seeing how people don’t look at the trade as anything but a positive. Gray was here one more year at 40 million dollars. We weren’t bringing him back at 37. We found someone to pay Gray half of the money owed and give us two prospects in return. Maybe the prospects amount to nothing but they have upside and definitely have tools to work with.

He has not pitched a full season, but at least has a season over 100 innings. He is the only one.

Since when is 29 starts and 151 IP not considered "pitching a full season"?

I don’t look at trying to replace Gray for next season but it would be nice. We have Doyle, Franklin, and our new prospect to develop. Maybe there’s a Gray in there somewhere. Fitts will be trying to replace Mikolas or Pallante. Not the hardest job, plus this is the first of several moves that should happen.

The best thing going forward would be anyways if the Cardinals could get away from the idea that you need an "ace." Not to say that you don't need an ace, but it feels like they've tried to put too much reliance on whoever it is they anoint as their ace. For some time they thought it was C. Martinez, J. Flaherty, etc...

It was nice having a pitcher of Gray's pedigree and he sure fit the bill. I guess my point is the best teams seem to have 3 or 4 guys, not just 1, who they would seemingly trust in a big game ie a playoff game. In other words, I'd rather have 5 #2's and 3's over 1 ace and a bunch of #5's.

Whether it's coming from the minors or outside the system, what you want is 3 guys that can pitch at least 170-180 innings at a sub-1.20 whip, or, 4 that can pitch at least 150-160 innings at a 1.30 whip. It's about covering as many innings as you can upto a certain level of quality, imo. There are a lot of innings to cover in an mlb season.

I thought he started in the minors this year. Ok, we have one pitcher who has pitched a complete season.

The way I could see it falling through for Boston would be if the AL East is as tough on Sonny Gray as it was his first go around in that division when he was a Yankee. Then it could be a waste for Boston.
