Baltimore writer feels Boston potentially fleeced on Gray trade

Baltimore Oriole writer take on Red Sox move to obtain Sonny Gray . Oriole writer thinks that takes Peralta off the table for Boston.
He feels Boston out of the trade market now for a better pitcher.
Guess we will see on that prediction.

So not fleeced, just that they won't get a better pitcher via free agency?

Boston has plenty of money. $20M / 1 year contracts never hurt anyone with their means.
If they want another better pitcher, they can sign to a long term contract that's backloaded.

Worst way to get a good pitcher so that's another win for Boom.Midrange Jay wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 12:57 pmJust like the Cardinals!scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 12:56 pm So not fleeced, just that they won't get a better pitcher via free agency?

I'm just saying the Baltimore writer is wishful thinking against his rival.

I’m not calling anything a “win” until they replace the salary dumps with major league talent. We currently don’t have a SP that has pitched a complete season.alw80 wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 13:26 pmWorst way to get a good pitcher so that's another win for Boom.Midrange Jay wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 12:57 pmJust like the Cardinals!scoutyjones2 wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 12:56 pm So not fleeced, just that they won't get a better pitcher via free agency?

He has not pitched a full season, but at least has a season over 100 innings. He is the only one.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 13:37 pmLiberatore?Midrange Jay wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 13:36 pmI’m not calling anything a “win” until they replace the salary dumps with major league talent. I'm sure they'll sign a guy to fill innings.Midrange Jay wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 13:36 pmI’m not calling anything a “win” until they replace the salary dumps with major league talent. And while the guy they sign(likely one year) won’t be as good as Gray this is about beyond 2026 and Gray would be gone anyway.
Re: Baltimore writer feels Boston potentially fleeced on Gray trade
Exactly. Worrying about competing in '26 is a waste of time. But this trade is the most exciting move the organization has made in years. This team is finally on the uptick after years of stagnation.Cusecards wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 13:53 pmAgreealw80 wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 13:49 pmI'm sure they'll sign a guy to fill innings.Midrange Jay wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 13:36 pmI’m not calling anything a “win” until they replace the salary dumps with major league talent. And I expect them to compete hard in 2026.
Results probably come up short but it’s a start.

I don't expect them to be much worse than in '25.Cusecards wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 14:02 pmMore to come.alw80 wrote: ↑25 Nov 2025 13:57 pmExactly. Worrying about competing in '26 is a waste of time. Re: Baltimore writer feels Boston potentially fleeced on Gray trade
I’m not seeing how people don’t look at the trade as anything but a positive. Gray was here one more year at 40 million dollars. We weren’t bringing him back at 37. We found someone to pay Gray half of the money owed and give us two prospects in return. Maybe the prospects amount to nothing but they have upside and definitely have tools to work with.
I don’t look at trying to replace Gray for next season but it would be nice. We have Doyle, Franklin, and our new prospect to develop. Maybe there’s a Gray in there somewhere. Fitts will be trying to replace Mikolas or Pallante. Not the hardest job, plus this is the first of several moves that should happen.
