I got addicted right away listening to Dan Kelly and Gus Kyle on the radio in '67. Then my friends and I started going to games regularly before we could drive. We'd take the bus from South County down Hampton, where it dropped us off near the 905 liquor store. Then when we began driving, we'd park in the neighborhoods around The Arena.
Tickets were dirt cheap, and the old Arena made the game like a gospel revival because it was single-tier and you could walk from ice level to the rafters. So the crowd was not divided by decks as it is now. And it was loud and standing as one -- and spine-tingling when the Blues entered the ice to "When the Saints Come Marching In." It was truly a spiritual-like experience. And because few players wore helmets, you could immediately tell who was who on both teams throughout the game.
I still miss the Old Barn, warts and all!

I really dig the way you described it - like a gospel revival. I only have vague memories of the old barn but the main thing I remember is how (bleep) loud that place could get. Like the whole building was shaking.icon wrote: ↑05 Nov 2025 17:44 pm I got addicted right away listening to Dan Kelly and Gus Kyle on the radio in '67. Alex Pietrangelo glancing at me at the combine. We locked eyes and it was just on. You know when you know something just clicks and is right? Was like that.
When the Blues drafted him, it make kinda like them. He’s powerful and captivating.

Whoo boy. That’s really something. Christmas is coming. Maybe you can put this on your wish list.

Uncle took me to my first game Easter night vs Detroit in 1984, Dick Schofield got into 3 fights, Blues won, and have been passionate fan ever since.
Currently STH from KS, drive 4 hours one way for games and back home after most games. Some say I am committed, wife says I should be committed.
Huge fan of Thomas and excited to see the next few seasons with the introduction of the prospects.

Parents split season tickets with some others they worked with when I was young, I really liked the pace compared to other sports as a kid. I suspect this would be around '94-'95 timeframe since I started playing when I was 6. I remember my dad being upset at the Shanahan trade and I remember my dad always laughing when Courtnall would start pesting.
Hockey was just the most complex/fluid sport I remember watching and I was hooked at looking through stats and players from a lot of teams. After I quit playing when I was 13 I didn't follow it much but got back into watching really heavily in roughly 2009 and never stopped following since. I haven't missed a home opener or first playoff game since 2012.
I have yet to take someone to their first game and not have them be more invested in the sport, people who don't like hockey have just never watched it my experience. My boss is coming into town from Ireland and I am hoping to take him to his first hockey game next Tuesday.

I became a Blues fan when the St Louis hockey team switched its jersey from the disgusting red/black/white jersey with the Native American chief image on the chest!!! Yes, the St Louis Braves, the CHL farm team of the Chicago Blackhawks. I attended those games and was THRILLED when it was announced that St Louis had been granted a franchise.
I tell everyone that I am a "life-long Blues fan", but unlike most other fans, I am referring to the life of Blues franchise, not my life! I have also been fortunate enough to have Blues players as both close friends and as clients (I am a Certified Public Accountant and an Attorney). One of my favorite Blues memories was attending a Christmas party with about half the then-current team in attendance at the home of one of the players.
One thing I like about this year's Blues team is the influx of some very talented young players displaying some attractive potential!!

I first became a fan while watching Garry Unger and Chuck Lefley in the old barn. My parents would allow me to watch the first 2 periods of mid week televised games because I had to go to bed for school. I went to my first home game when I was 10 with my Dad. I’ve bled Blue ever since.
The current team is loaded with young talent with more on the way. My favorite player is Robert Thomas. I’m waiting for him to take the next step and became a star 100 pt player.
Good thread. Go Blues!

My story is very similar to icon (who described going to games at a young age very well ). I was young, 14, because we were not of driving age when the Blues first were formed. I came from University City and to get the free parking we would park in the park and cross the bridge over Highway 40.
I loved the old Arena. I would sometimes have standing room only tickets and stand on the pillars to get a better view of the ice.
How could someone not get hooked on such a fast, exciting game and we had the veteran players. Of course we loved Bob and Barclay Plager and the Red Baron.

Birthright south city fan. If I like one thing about this year, it's that it will end and either McKenna or the pronger clone will be there to draft and Carbonneau will be here next season.

The core memory I have as a 90s kid is laying on the couch watching the game with my grandpa and puking into a bucket every 5 mins bc I had that annual stomach bug. Didn’t know the Blues would leave me feeling the same almost every spring

Lots of good stories here. That's why I wanted to have the thread. Good spot to just put some nostalgia in. Added story, we played street hockey nearly every day after school. It was the only thing that basically a 6-8 year gap of kids did together. I don't know why but Grant Fuhr was the guy that kid me wanted to be. All the neighborhood kids loved it because they finally had someone that voluntarily wanted to play goalie every day. Those guys all play ice hockey too so I guess it was a win win for them.
