You would think a team in this situation with this player reached out to the league in advance of any deadline and clarified what they should do, what they could do and/or what the outcome of those decisions would be. Maybe I'm being naive, but wouldn't the Flyers have done what was needed to cover their bases and ensure they get a fair shake in all of this?

Perhaps? Or maybe their thinking was different back then. I wouldn’t be surprised if their stance back then was “we need to distance ourselves from Hart as much as possible.” and now that he’s been acquitted AND they need a goalie, perhaps their view of the situation is different now. Long story short, I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t put a lot of consideration into them perhaps wanting to retain Hart at some point in the future as for a while there, it was not looking good for these 5 guys at all.

It would be interesting to find out the conversations with Flyer's and the Hart camp while this was all going on. Does Hart feel jaded at all toward the Org, or were they supportive?

That's a very good point. The Flyers certainly may have felt the Carter ship had sailed and resolved themselves to the fact he wouldn't be playing for them. Tough spot, for sure.

Maybe they have, there were a lot of fans upset that Hart and others were not IMMEDIATELY made eligible. It might be that the NHL, NHLPA, and a shitton of lawyers are trying to hammer out a deal. I can't find where the league made them ineligible in the first place. Hart asked for indefinite leave and was granted. Philly didn't attempt to QO him. There was no official "ban" from the league. I think this is a thing for the lawyers.
