His mom was 17 when he was born and didn't finish high school
His dad was 19 and incarcerated when he was born
Pham's stepfather stabbed him during a fight
He was a good pitching prospect in high school but barely pitched his senior year because he didn't like it
Hurt a TON as he came up through the minors... but still blamed the organization for holding him back and demanded his release in 2014.

Check out the New York Times article by Ken Rosenthal titled "Beyond the Slap: Everything You Think You Know About Tommy Pham, You Don’t", or watch the YouTube interview where Pham breaks down the story behind it.

The article started after a conversation between Pham and Mets assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske. The Mets had just traded away Verlander, Scherzer, and Pham, and Rosenthal asked Hinske which player the team would miss the most. Surprisingly, Hinske said, “Pham.” That caught Rosenthal off guard. Hinske told him to go ask Francisco Lindor.

Rosenthal did, and Lindor said he loved Pham — that Pham taught him how to work harder. A few weeks later, Rosenthal asked the Diamondbacks’ GM who the most underrated player on the team was. Again, the answer was Pham.

From there, Rosenthal spoke to teammates, coaches, and managers who had worked with Pham — and they all praised him. After the article came out, some fans still dismissed Pham, calling him a jerk. But Rosenthal emphasized that the opinions of those who actually played with him mean more than fan perceptions.

For example, Pham gave up a chance to make MLB postseason history by going 5-for-5, just so teammate Jace Peterson could get his first World Series at-bat.

Bottom line: Whatever you think you know about Tommy Pham — you probably don’t.

Meanwhile, when a guy like Doyle plays with intensity, fans celebrate it and call him a competitor. But when Pham shows that same fire, people call him a problem. There’s a double standard.

On the "injured" while in the minors, it had to do with attempting to getting his sight corrected. The guy shouldn't have been able to play baseball at the high school or college level, much less the major league level. He changed contacts regularly to adjust for his eyes shifting.

His upbringing was tough, but that tough allowed him to stay in baseball when the average major leaguer would have quit.

I personally like his fire, could have lived with less $%^&*), but he could play baseball - hit, speed, arm, defense, along with some power.

2010 - fracture in wrist
2011 - torn ligaments in wrist
2012 - torn labrum in left shoulder
2013 - torn labrum in right shoulder
2015 - strained left quad
2016 - strained oblique during batting practice on Opening Day (had made MLB team)

I'm curious as to how you're associating these... and really any of them... to his eyesight?

What I think doesn’t matter what old friend thinks doesnt matter even though you think it does all that matters is what his teammates and Rosenthal did the research consulted his former teammates coaches and managers and not only was he regarded as a good teammate but he was regarded as a great teammate. You are wrong but you have the right to be wrong so continue being wrong
