I’m not a PD subscriber, will have to see if Woo reports anything.
It was an opinion column, he wasn't reporting anything.
But it fits with what I heard Goold mention either on his last podcast or in his chat about concerns that the team has about promoting him. I don't know that he's formally reported it in the paper, though. Not sure about what Woo has had to say on the subject.

Hey if he comes up in September great! Psyched to see him play.
I still think it’ll be be more of an issue concerning PT for others as JJ will obviously play when he is called up.
Only so many spots and they may need more time to assess what to do with Gorman, etc etc?

Who are these players currently with the team that REQUIRE this “playing time” talked about here that will make it hard to find time for JJ??
Seriously, someone NEEDS to see more of
NOOT
Gorman
Scott
Saggesse
NA
I’m completely at a loss about this explanation why a team wouldn’t bring up the jewel of their minor league system, install at 3b or 2b for a month, give him ML experience and see what he has……
The Cards wouldn’t do this because a bunch of JAGS who have been mostly stinking it up all year NEED one more month????

Knowing what we know about how Oli manages PT, I think it's quite a stretch to assume that. At least not without simultaneously demoting Saggese.
Ideally I'd like to see Hampson DFA'd, Saggese demoted, and Church/Wetherholt promoted.

I hear you!
Your idea certainly could come to fruition?

Unfortunately I think the chances of them demoting Saggese are in the 1% range... and even if he's promoted I don't think JJ gets a very useful amount of PT without Saggese being taken away from Oli.

I see that the “Resident Whiner” is bored and needs something to fixate his attention on.
Thank God this Bozo isn’t anywhere near the FO of the team.
Since none of us here have ANY inside info on any of the players how about we let it play out?
By all means.....we should let a whining crybaby wearing Depends and a tinfoil hat make the call!
And if JJ comes up.....great and hope they have a plan in place?

True
But I still think they may be using the end of the season to finalize their decisions on a few players who very well could be cut loose after the season?

Whenever that date passes (8/15?) that keeps his rookie status for 2026, he needs to be up here and in the lineup the next day.
In MLB, a player loses their rookie status if they exceed 130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, or 45 days on the active roster in any previous MLB season according to MLB.com.
Winn was called up on 8/18/23 and finished the season with 122 ABs. I would think Wetherholt watch might begin as early as this coming Monday, 8/18 against the Marlins. Get his feet wet with his new teammates on the FL road trip before coming back to St Louis for the 4 game set against Pittsburgh.
Thx rage!
I knew the status criteria, just have never been able to figure out the date.

Here's the problem as I see it. On a team with 5 or 6 well established starters when you get that other 2 or 3 that are sucking their story gets well played out in the media and they are usually guys that have been on the fence or contracts are ending. It is easy for the team to then call up somebody that is excelling in September. Come show us your stuff and get some experience you will be given opportunities next season is the mantra. The guys being replaced sees the writing on the wall and everyone knows the deal.
This team however lacks almost any solid starters and no manager or front office willing to back them as we all know changes lie on the horizon. I would be stunned if they call up JJ this year unless Donovan, Winn and Saggesse all went down in a hurry with injuries. Even then we would probably see Fermin first.
They are waiting until the off season happens and the new 2026 team can take shape. Once ST starts we will hopefully see 4 or 5 of the guys causing the log jam gone. They will then clear a hole for JJ so he can start from day one and know he has a spot some where. Let him gel with the players he will be playing alongside rather than a bunch he will not be playing with. The team wants to go as quietly as possible in the off season as they can it seems. They do not want to upset any of the guys in the locker room that will get their ego's cracked because of the new kid showing them up. They can state you had your season to show improvement, thanks and have a nice life and move on rather than deal with all of the second guessing from the media.

They will make significant progress dealing with the roster logjams this winter. Hopefully the things they do for the rest of this season maximizes the trade values of those involved. That may not involve promoting and playing Wetherholt to finish the year.

Good points!
As of today I would list:
Solid starters- Donovan, Contreras, Winn
Most likely starters- Herrera and Arenado. I list Arenado here because while I know they want to move him....if they can’t.....he starts every day.
On the fence but likely starting- Burleson
After that I agree it’s a crapshoot and I will be anxious to see who gets moved?
With JJ and one of the Catchers(Crooks? Bernal?) becoming solid starters in 2026 the rest are competing to save their spots on the roster.
Buckle up!
