You then have JJ at 2nd which is a good bet, plus the strengthened SP or MOTOB pipeline. You keep Donnie, then what? You have a solid 1-2 hitter for a terrible team that isn't going anywhere. So he is essentially wasted here.

What if Donovan gets you a solid #2 starter? Then it's Gorman + Pitcher >>>> Donovan

Sooo, a contending team is going to trade their game 2 playoff starter for Brendan Donovan? I don't think so.

Hate to tell you but Gorman's not THAT bad at 2b and of course, Wetherholt's probably manning that position in the future.

This team is likely not to be competitive until at least 2027-28, especially with what's likely to be a paradigm-shifting CBA after next season.

If some team is willing to give a haul for Donny, it'd be borderline idiotic NOT to do it. Donny's a great player but he's not a MOTO bat so Cards need core pieces before they should concern themselves with paying a lot to complementary players.

Agreed. Donovan only has two more arb years and is having the best season of his career. By the time the Cardinals are good again, Donovan is in his 30s and possibly wouldn't get extended. I would be comfortable with the Cardinals trading him, but I'd prefer the new regime does it in the offseason. I also don't expect a TOR starter in return. Probably more like one or two team top 10 prospects.

My thing is, we get a decent player, and everybody wants to trade him to improve other areas, well, how often has that worked?
Why don’t we get rid of the guys not doing their parts, and try somebody else in their spots. Sure, you won’t get as much for them, in trade, but we haven’t weakened ourselves in doing so. I’d like to see what Donovan, Herrera, and Wetherholt could do hitting together.
