Leahy was stretched out to 50 pitches.
Not a coincidence.
Oli hinted the possibility of Leahy starting.
Worth a try because what they are doing now isn’t working, hasn’t worked. Why has it taken so long?

"How does he get anyone out with that [shirt] he throws?"
Then how did he throw that complete game shutout, 11WS?

Contract.
Standings.
Trade deadline.
Everything except playing the games.
The Cardinals do not make baseball decisions.

+1...everybody who's watched his last 10 or so starts can see he's toast.. except that [fork]ing Mo-ran in the front office.

The key for a pitcher is the ability to control the variables consistently- grip, release point, etc.- and also react to things like atmospheric conditions and the always variable strike zone. Pitchers talk about how the thin air in CO does not make it easy to control ball movement but of course the smart guys figure it out and change their pitch selection and execution. Fedde probably had a lucky game when he showed better concentration and got some breaks.

Isn’t that symptomatic of a problem with the pitching coach?

No [shirt]. He would still be one of the worst guys on our roster, where the bar is low.

I only wish they'd see it more seriously with Mikolas, too.
Don't count on that he is owed 7 million
Someone has to say it. The contract plays.

Why is that surprising to posters?

Everybody gets a bite of the sandwich but I would imagine the coaching is less of an issue than the evaluation of talent and capability by the front office. Imagine the scene from Moneyball but with Mo tossing the magnets with player names at the board. "We need a RHP under $10 million."

If the Cardinals cannot trade Fedde and Mikolas, simply DFA. Maybe moving Mikolas to the pen for a mop up role would change his mind about his no trade contract. Leahy's performance could be an indication that the Cards do see him as a future starter. If the Cards trade Helsley, who takes on the role as closer?

Well he was worth it to the Dodgers who won a WS because of him and would not have without him. It doesn’t matter if he never gets another hit it was worth the trade for them. They also got Kopech who helped them win. WS got a young third baseman who is doing ok so far. The Cardinals were the loser in that trade. Feddee did ok last year but not good enough for Cards to make the playoffs and is terrible this year.

Great. You'd be (bleep) about the contract they gave him going forward.

He got lucky? And it was against the Nationals.

If Helsey and Maton are moved, O'Brien, Graceffo, and Svanson will be looked at for late inning roles.
Granillo will return and will be in the general relief mix.
Romero is a wild card - could be moved, could stay - depending on offers.
Worth noting Leahy was a starter for 4 seasons in the minors, so it is not an unfamiliar role to him.
