if they go hitter, I'd rather see a guy with high contact, gap power than 'slug baby slug..and strikeout'

And Mo did in fact come out of the Rockies organization so we know he left a lot of stupid DNA there.HorseTrader wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 11:33 amNow remember you are talking about the Rockies, they are run by Mo's step bro.....so who knowsrockondlouie wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 11:09 am^^^THIS^^^craviduce wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 10:05 am Baseball America's Final Mock...7.0
1. Nationals ~ Anderson, LHP, LSU
2. Angels ~ Doyle, LHP, Tennessee
3. Mariners ~ Hernandez, RHP, Corona HS, Calif.
4. Rockies ~ Holliday, SS/3B, Stillwater HS, Okla.
5. Cardinals ~ Willits, SS, Ft. Cobb-Broxton HS, Okla.
6. Pirates ~ Arquette, SS, Oregon St.
But would love for the Rockies to pass on Matty's boy but they won't, too good a player and marketing opportunity given how popular Matt was in Denver.

Re: GDT : MLB Draft (7/13-14) ~ 5:00pm CDT
Very weak class of college hitters which is why so many high school position players. Most very good high school hitters play shortstop which why so many in this top of draft. None of these players would top last years top 7 so Cards lucked out with Wetherholt. Hernandez has the highest ceiling for the pitchers and the college arms with the exception of Anderson are mostly mid rotation pitchers.
If the Cards were able to get another pick in the 30’s i wouldn’t mind an underslot at 5 due to such a weak top 10. Bremner would not surprise me for Cards if Willits or Holiday are gone.

I hate FB, changeup pitchers with bad breaking stuff.TraveledLessRoad wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 11:13 amI will say that Bremner feels like a typical Cardinal pick if past is protocol. Good fastball and a changeup that some scouts grade at 70. Kinda sounds like Michael Wacha with a better fastball. Add to that, they me be able to sign him underslot and maybe you're on to something here. I'd be fine with that pickbillybaseball wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 10:17 am Up early this morning so started to dig into the draft heavily. I think the Cardinals take Tyler Bremner and sign him to minimum underslot deal. Wrote this up in another thread I started but I'll copy it here too.
Bremner started slow but had 10 or more K's, 6+innings, and 3 or less ER in 6 of his last 7 starts. His dumb college team held him out of their elimination game and went with the normal slot in the rotation. Had he gotten that start and kept up his recent dominance then I think he'd be a slam dunk top 10 and maybe top 5 if a team is looking for a RHP over the lefties. Bremner has the best FB/Changeup combo in the draft but his slider was inconsistent to start the year. Once he locked it in he was dominant. Uc Santa Barbara is not a high end college for developing pitchers too so I think there is a ton of untapped potential with Bremner. Would not be upset if the Cardinals take him at 5.

I've heard many pundits talk about the Rockies throwing a record breaking overslot deal at Holliday to get him signed. I wonder if this is because Holliday has told them he doesn't want to play there?

Given where the organization is at in viewing all levels - and what is likely to happen with the 40-man in the next 2 years - this is a year for the Cardinals to target college level pitching.
Going the high school route for an arm or a bat is not the right strategic thinking right now.

If this is how it goes with the top 4, it's going to be Arnold over Willits, no? Quality college SP who will move fast.82birds wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 11:10 amArquette to the Pirates seems way out of the norm for them.rockondlouie wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 11:09 am^^^THIS^^^craviduce wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 10:05 am Baseball America's Final Mock...7.0

Just heard an interview that said Arnold could be ready for the MLB by later next season.RunSup wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 12:51 pmIf this is how it goes with the top 4, it's going to be Arnold over Willits, no? Hadn't heard that, but it's been reported that the Rockies are his preferred destination. Not sure it's a record breaking deal to get him to Colorado so much as to scare the Angels and Mariners off.billybaseball wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 12:11 pm I've heard many pundits talk about the Rockies throwing a record breaking overslot deal at Holliday to get him signed. Arnold and Doyle would be the right pick for STL - but if both are gone, I would prefer Arquette over Willits.82birds wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 11:10 amArquette to the Pirates seems way out of the norm for them.rockondlouie wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 11:09 am^^^THIS^^^craviduce wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 10:05 am Baseball America's Final Mock...7.0

Rockies are in a very interesting spot, and it will be interesting to watch.
Since one or more of Anderson, Doyle, Hernandez, or Arnold are guaranteed to be available - that is the group they should choose from.
Which would probably make Holiday available at 5.
That would put the Cardinals in position to take Holiday since the top 4 arms would be off the board.
That said, I do not expect the Rockies to be smart enough to draft pitching if Holiday is on the board.
They will make the PR pick, not the baseball pick.

Book it! Cards will take a college pitcher. Cards need more young starters that are closer to major league ready. McGreevey, Roby and Matthews to go along with Libby could be very solid but adding a LHP like Arnold could round out the staff quite well.RunSup wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 12:51 pmIf this is how it goes with the top 4, it's going to be Arnold over Willits, no? True BB about the potential record breaking bonus and from what I've read he's more than happy to go to Denver where he was born.billybaseball wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 12:11 pm I've heard many pundits talk about the Rockies throwing a record breaking overslot deal at Holliday to get him signed. Per The Athletic's Keith Law, the Rockies would consider an over-slot bonus for Holliday if they take him with the No. 4 overall pick.
Slot value for the fourth pick is $8.77 million. The Rockies' $15.723 million bonus pool is the fifth-most in this year's draft.
Even if Holliday signs for slot value, it would be the richest bonus ever given to a high school player in draft history. The current record is $8.19 million by Ethan's brother, Jackson, when he was drafted No. 1 by the Baltimore Orioles in 2022.

If Arnold is taken in the top 4 instead of Hernandez, then the gut check is Hernandez vs. Willits vs. Parker vs. another college SP like Witherspoon.redbirdfan51 wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 13:05 pmBook it! Regardless, someone good at #5. And it will be fun to watch.

So this is the early drama. But probably becomes moot by the 2nd pick.rockondlouie wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 13:08 pmTrue BB about the potential record breaking bonus and from what I've read he's more than happy to go to Denver where he was born.billybaseball wrote: ↑13 Jul 2025 12:11 pm I've heard many pundits talk about the Rockies throwing a record breaking overslot deal at Holliday to get him signed. - How much over slot is Holliday asking for?
- Will the Rockies meet his demand if he's there at #4?
- Does he love STL and trying to drop to the Cardinals?
- Will the Cardinals meet an over slot demand?
- Would he go to college for a year?
