To my knowledge, there has never been a barely .500 team win the title

.500 teams don’t even make the tournament…
Don't know what you consider "barely .500," but the 2006 Cardinals won only 83 games (.516).

Not to split hairs but last yr 83 wins. On pace for 86 but that’s assuming duplicate performance from first half. Even a couple modest moves or addition by subtraction and lighter 2nd half schedule could still make a 90 win season attainable. Doubt they’d make a run though unless they make a bigger deadline splash.

Is the schedule lighter? I haven't looked

I think they are an 86'win team, at best

40 - 28 get the Birds' to 90 wins and likely a playoff spot.

Tough road given Mikolas, Fedde and Pallante take the ball every fifth day unless one or more is dealt.

But you never know, one long winning streak and it's doable!

We haven't played the Rockies yet while most of our rivals have. That's 5 or 6 wins if we don't stub our toe.

Have we played the Padres? Gigantes? Still play Dodgers and Yanks, Crew, Scrubs

They are now on pace to win 86 games. Much better than expected by me, but would it be enough to make the playoffs?

And that's not accounting for zero pitching injuries so far. How long can that last?

Hopefully only until Mikolas and Fedde accidentally run into each other this weekend and both go on the IL.

Be tough

How many games did that Shildt team run off in 2021, 17 in a row?

I wouldn't place any money on that happening again either.

Well we are 39-29 in our last 68 games, so it’s a game better than what we’ve been playing.

What they do at the deadline will certainly change things.

For sure

BDWJr has told Mo he'd add payroll if they're still in contention, let's see what they do in the coming weeks.

.489 opponents win% - 23rd ranked strength of schedule. Also 5 more home vs road games. They could have a stronger 2nd half especially if they do something decent at deadline.
