•A comprehensive playoff salary cap mechanism, which has many machinations to account for player acquisition, will effectively close the LTIR loophole for teams to significantly pad payroll by using injury relief space.

FINALLY...
Yep, I figured the obvious games teams like Tampa and LV played and this year Edmonton would finally get GM's to go "Yeah this isn't what this was intended for"

It's about time.
I may be wrong, but until Florida won the Cup last season, our Blues were the last "CAP compliant" Cup winner.
which is just ridiculous.
Who did Colorado have on the ltir?

What will they ever do if they can only sign him for one less year than they can now
It could be a savings of 15 million in one year if he keep progressing....
you don't get the extra year free
If you could have an all stat at 9 or 15 million then what would you rather have...?
Well he's definitely getting more than 9 and probably less than 15 so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

:D :D struck a nerve!

Assume we aren't counting TOI in these milestones? Playing 3 more mins a game than the others def helps, thats essentially playing 4 full 60 min games more over the course of 82 games

I don't know what the unintended consequences would be of teams having to ice a team under the same salary cap in the post seasons as they did in the regular season. They could have been down a $8m player and replaced him with another $8m player in the regular season, but come the playoffs and they both can play then the team picks which one plays and which one watches to comply with the cap. Of course they could play them both and sit a couple other players that add up to $8m but that's up to them. My hypothetical obviously assumes a team is 100% against the cap.

I don't see this as an overly complicated situation to solve and would put all teams on the same competitive level they played the regular season in.

I don't remember whose LTIR they used, but the traded for Josh Manson and used LTIR to ice a full team in the playoffs (I believe they were 2+ million over the CAP with their playoff team).

I could be wrong, but I thought I read where the 20 skaters for any playoff game would need to be cap compliant, not the roster itself. Again, there were several proposals and articles, so I may have read this wrong. It will be interesting to see the final language on this.

the roster I would assume. You can't be over the cap with healthy scratches during the regular season, so why should the playoffs not follow the same logic?

When Vegas won the cup, the team they iced was actually cap compliant. However they had 15+ million sitting in the press box.

The rule should be your 23 man roster has to be cap compliant, anyone that puts you over has to be scratched and ineligible for the series.

You can make changes at the end of each series.

And no more deferred-money contracts. That's what enabled the original St. Louis Blues to sign iconic former stars for another season or two....and eventually forced the Salomons to sell the team to Ralston-Purina once the nightly sellouts ended.

A longer regular season (84 games), but shorter preseason (4 games per team).

What is the unintended consequence in closing this loophole?

From Seravalli. No real details on how they're changing LTIR yet, just that it's changing to close the loophole.

This is a good thing. It evens out the playing field between high market teams and small market teams. The NHL got this one right.
