Hampson's been non-tendered or released by five clubs recently. Do the Cards just need a warm-body rental for now?
Barrero couldnt hit or field.
Hampson is just as versatile and cant hit either but can at least somewhat field.
And he runs very fast, so a 1.5 tool player.

I was wondering why they would drop Barrero for him both are utility guys neither can hit but barrero has much better physical tools but reading about Hampson I guess he is a pretty solid defensive player so it makes sense. If neither can hit take the one that can field. Barrero was pretty bad on defense
This move is going to actually cost the Cardinals almost half million dollars. They must have had a clear preference for Hampson over Barrero.
We are probably saving money on this move. We are paying the prorated league minimum for Hampson, with Arizona picking up the difference. It costs us $50K for the waiver claim. I can't find what Barrero's contract was for when he signed a minor league deal with us, but I'm sure it was for more than the league minimum.

Jose barreros contract is for league minimum. And he still makes the full amount from us unless someone else claims him and assumes it or as soon as someone signs him they take over paying the rest since they have to pay prirated league minimum.(well signs him to play in mlb anyway- if he signs minor league deal to not be on teams 40 man, then he costs less for them and they pay lessnof it for us)
He started on a minor league contract but as soon as we add him to 40 man roster- his mlb contract is purchased for the rest of the year.
Ultimately though, its nlt enough money to even worry about

One "meh" player for another "meh" player.
The move is to keep Saggese up here and play him one game a week at 3rd, SS and 2B plus PH.

Why did they sign this joker? Is he Nolan Arenado's valet?

I'm not sure you are correct on that Wattage, not trying to be a dick or start a fight, but Barrero already had some service time when we signed him on a minor league deal. When a player signs a free agent minor league contract usually there are a few teams bidding on him and he probably signed for a little more than league minimum. If you are getting your contract info from spotrac, they are wrong. They just put $760,000 for guys they don't know what the amount is. This is where they are the worst at information, they just put everyone with league minimum contracts. Also, Barrero signed a minor league deal and only gets paid the pro rated major league amount when he is on the major league roster. According to MLBtraderumors if he signed a minor league contract and made the team out of spring training, then he is guaranteed the full amount for the year. But Barrero didn't make the team out of spring training so he is paid the minor portion while in the minors and vice versa. He still gets paid the major league portion while he is in DFA limbo. If you have anything different than what I say, show me the link and I will check it.

Its hard to find any mention of it inarticles- but i made.mistake- you are correct he is not guaranteed.mlb.pay.while in minors.
But i still doubt he signed for more than mlb minimum considering he didnt even get a major league deal.
But you are right in that i never found an official source. I did find though that his previous contract with reds that ended last year was still only league minimum base salary each year but they had paid him a 5 million signing bonus when they first signed him even though his base salary.was.league minimum.

This is clearly a DEI hire by the Cardinals. Barrero had too little production and too much melanin.

At least Garrett Hampson is still very fast and has a decent glove, but really....five teams gave up on him over two seasons.

unless you count that game-saving diving catch to his left of a line drive the other night
That was a great one but he has made some pretty bad plays at short and was an adventure in center field. Although it could be an Arenado signing. Cards signed Carpenter after arenado wanted him signed and he apparently spoke highly of this guy so it could be because of him he was signed

my greater disappointment with him was his offense, or lack thereof

Any player that has major league service usually gets more than the league minimum even if it's a minor league deal. He may not get much more, but in a lot of instances it would be more than they would get through the pre-arbitration process. Again don't use spotrac for your source, Cot's is much better. When Spotrac doesn't know the salary, which is the case often in these instances they just use the league minimum as almost a placeholder. If you look at their site and it shows the Cardinal payroll it shows a lot of the preabitration players just making the league minimum which isn't the case. The only players on the Cardinals making the league minimum are players with no mlb experience at all.
