Went directly at Robert’s when Tatis got hit. Right or wrong he always has his players back to a fault (Matt Carpenter). More managers should be like that. He never would have thrown or allowed WC to be thrown under the bus like he was a couple of years ago.
When was WillyCon thrown under a bus? How long was he on the IL?
Shhhhhh...you are going to ruin a good ax grinding.
I’m a bitter old man give me space.
You're actually right about this though... bizarre how anyone would dispute WC being thrown under the bus. It was a humiliating public critique of their brand new FA signing... clown move by a clown manager (who granted has since improved).
Back to your OP though... interesting that as much as he sticks up for his players that he was like #2 on the list of managers the players would least want to play for on that informal poll from last week.
Not true at all...it was due to the [fork]ing garbage WBC and pitchers not getting time with WillyCon...
Man, CT can't stop grinding the non-existent axe.
It's so pathetic, it's funny ...and why I love this place!
WillyCon was so distraught over this that he stays with the team and takes charge as a leader...poor Willy
The fact that WC handled it about as gracefully as humanly possible doesn't mean it wasn't a super [shirt]ty way to treat your brand new FA acquisition.
The WBC was an excuse that management used when it was very clear there were 2-3 pitchers who had complained about him to coaches, which instead of shutting down like responsible adults in the room they decided to entertain.
Your claim of super [shirt]ty just isn't true...
WillyCon was calling for pitches the pitchers didn't throw...
The WBC wasn't an excuse...it actually happened. And it shouldn't. It's (bleep)
I'm not saying WC was doing great, or even that the pitchers' concerns were unjustified. It was the publicly humiliating way Marmol hung him out to dry that was totally classless by an organization that has marketed itself for decades as the classiest in the league.
It absolutely could have been handled internally, and it would have by a better manager.
LoL. It affected nothing but just gives fodder to those who dislike Oli, a reason to complain.
WillyCon had no issue, but some on CT do... interesting.

I’m still bitter about when he was first acquired and they decided he couldn’t catch (as good as Yadi I guess). It was just covering for a bunch of whiney pitchers in my opinion. If you remember they put him in the bench to learn. Granted he is no Yadi but they knew that. Pitching staff was spoiled and frankly had not learned to call or help call their own game.
That couldn't have been handled worse. No need for it to have been so public.

No, he did not complain, moan, or anything of the sort. He was a professional, unlike Oli, Mo, Waino, Flaherty, etc., who threw him under the bus.

True and when he has had a opportunity to leave, he was one of the first to decide to stay despite the Cardinals' pets. Look at their careers afterwards and they each have been failures every since. Dig a ditch for somebody and it may become your own personal burial ground.

Plus, they should have traded Pop Warner rather than Tyler O'Neill, whom Oli then publicly humiliated.
Someday I'd love the hear the true story of why, after winning 17 of 18 late in the season, the Cards cashiered Shildt.

That's quite a spin you've created, Scouty. Willy was absolutely thrown under the bus. It started with Mikolas and Flaherty. Lil oli took their side. Mo as well. Willy was removed as catcher. But he handled it so gracefully, fans supported him. His handling of the situation made him a leader.

Since we're speaking here partly of Willson Contreras, he did something hilarious during the 5th inning of the 2nd game of the White Sox DH; as he approached the Cardinals dugout for a foul popup, he playfully swiped --- twice --- at a teammate on the rail. I had to find it last night and play it back for my wife to see, and she cracked up, too.

No spin. he wasn't prepared to catch and call pitches the pitchers thru...because of WBC. The team gave him time to do it and that was that...no hard feelings, no buses rolling over him...

I agree with your statement that the WBC caused problems. He was unable to get familiar with the staff. But the organization (Mo, oli, Dusty, etc), did not relay that to the media. Therefore, they allowed stories to circulate that Contreras hadn't attempted to learn his staff and that he wasn't putting effort into his job.
The pitching was exposed as the issue once the team ERA went up with Knizner catching. After a few weeks, Contreras was again the starting catcher.
Mo was exposed for putting together a junk staff. And Lil oli was exposed as jackasses that would throw players under the bus. Probably why he rated dead last in the recent players poll.

Word is he stood up to Mo demanding he go out and get players Shildt said he needed to compete for a WS.
Stand up to Mo, get fired by Mo.
Only TLR had the status to do that.
