I believe the next critical step for the Oilers to become true contenders is securing a reliable, high-caliber goaltender. If I were in Stan Bowman’s position, I’d strongly consider trading a first-round pick to acquire one. With the depth of prospects in the system, the Oilers could build a compelling trade package to address this key need.

Really poor asset management to have McDavid/Draisaitl and not be able to surround them with better supporting cast....Kapanen, Arvidsson, Perry, Frederic, Henrique, Podkolzin.... imagine if they had retained Holloway and or Broberg. Klingberg, Stetcher, Emberson, .... ewww

The thing is, they have needed one for the last decade and haven’t done anything about it. It doesn’t matter who the GM has been since there have been a few different ones. They have all been afflicted with a severe case of “Dubas Disease”. They have wasted the first 10 years of McDavid’s career as a result.

Figuring out goalies has to be one of the toughest jobs. You just don't know. Bobrovsky had a few down years and is now probably "the" goalie you want for a Stanley Cup run. The other one you'd want is Binner. He was third on the depth chart the year they won. Did the Blues get lucky? I don't know how to answer that. They did do the smart thing, lock him up and didn't trade him.

They don't have a first rounder until 2027. Based on more than a few publications have a prospect pool ranked in the low 20's, right around 28 or so.

They have a few prospects, nothing elite, and not much other teams would actually want.

The good news is a decent goaler doesn't cost much, the bad news is teams aren't trading them.

I would trade them Binnington for a couple of their top young players, like Holloway and Broberg.

Oh wait…….

Team balance/depth and leadership. Oilers come up far short in both.
The lack of the first has been addressed on multiple threads for a long time.
They sorely lack leadership behind the bench, on the ice/bench & in the room as well as in the Management Suite.
Connor McDavid should not even wear an A let alone a C. That spotlight on him is blinding. Temper tantrums, abandoning teammates as the bus careens toward them. He would be better served if he accepted a trade to a team that is loaded with future picks and/or prospects and that wants/needs a push to have more success & excitement now for their franchise...and most importantly he needs to simply be the best superstar player in the game -- skate, stickhandle, score, pass, and score some more. He can and needs to do nothing more. That spotlight will still find him.
The Oilers cannot just strip the C from him at this point.

And yet twice got beat by the same team, falling further back from their ultimate goal. The Panthers showed how to do it. In a copycat league, expect teams to mimic the Panther's style. Maybe not perfectly, and maybe without the tax advantage, but more teams will play EDM the way the Panthers did next year in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, we have yet to see how the Oilers will even manage to keep the band together, let alone make improvements. After last year, they overcompensated for a "lack of depth" by signing overpriced, bad wingers on day 1, and had to jettison valuable depth/future core pieces. Who will be the casualties this time when they overcompensate for their long neglected D/goaltending?

Maybe we can interest them in a Faulk/Hofer combo in exchange for Draisatl?

Well yeah … the team that’s head and shoulders better than everyone.

So they obliterated everyone but the team that’s head and shoulders better than everyone

This is the same team you were saying Petro ragdolled in the other thread, right? Amazing how quickly they got so much insurmountably better than everyone else...

They're good. They're not unbeatable. Unless your roster is fundamentally flawed and top-heavy.

Substitute some picks instead of Binnington, and you got a deal! 8)
