Don't you feel kinda silly? Kim, Ohtani, Betts and Freeman to save one run. Probably the hardest save in baseball. He strikes out 3 guys. They get a hit with a squibber bouncing off 2B.... Score a run on a K. Cards win.
The statement would still correct if Helsley was perfect on the year with an era under 1. But it’s obvious watching that his stuff isn’t the same as last year. It was foolish to not maximize his value when we are not going to be extending him.
That is just an opinion not shared by me. We are in the picture for the postseason. Trade your closer with a team in this situation, you should never run a team again. Tell these players their efforts are not worth betting on? Horse chit! You are wrong, IMO!

We won and he won. The pitcher we would’ve traded him for might’ve given up more than one run. Or the AAA scrub we replaced him with had we traded him for proverbial bucket of balls and a missed lotto ticket. There were no great offers in the off-season.

Helsley now with a 3.52 ERA and as many blown saves as he blew all of last season first batters came into the game batting .450 with a .500 OBP

Completely agree. Some posters like the OP have an inferiority complex and feel like we should give all of our talent to somebody who’s more deserving of it.

I say the STL cardinals deserve all the talent we can horde and more. We weren’t going to get more talent in return because there were no good offers on the table.

A one run save is EFN tough. And against that lineup? HugeCardFan hit the nail right on the head. And Helsley is better than most closers in the league. We're lucky to have him. Enjoy this W and figure out a way to get another, tomorrow.

There’s no way you actually watched the game. He was as dominant as he’s been in weeks.

Fluky Ohtani hit and a wild pitch.

Relax.

BTW.....we have NO CLUE as to what offers were made for Helsley?
So....stating it was “irresponsible” NOT to deal him is a joke.
If coming off his great season they would have dumped him in a bad deal CT would be marching on Busch with torches and pitchforks like in Frankenstein!

Yep. He was on the block and nobody offered enough, so hang on to him. The thread is a huge pile of fresh, steaming dog poop....as is it's author.

I expected helsley to regress from last season, although i expect the 1st batters numbers to improve as season goes on.

The real reason i dont wsnt to extend helsley is his lack of flexibility. He very rarely putches back to back days- necer will 3 days in a row nor ever 4 out of 5. Wont go more than an inning ever- there were a coupke exceptions to that poi t in extra innings game past coupke years. In past years he declared himself unavailable on certain days. Maybe he is doing whats right for his long term health and future money but its hard to rely on such an inflexible option longterm. I know hader is also strict with his allowed usage too in recent years

If YOU expected Helsley to regress, don’t you the other teams did, too and structured their bids accordingly? The same with Fedde. The value for both had a much higher ceiling than it did a lower floor.

Did you even watch? 2 fluke hits and he struck out the side. Maybe you are the irresponsible one.

The OP apparently didn't actually watch, because if he did, he could see that Helsley was dealing today as good as ever. He made Freddie Freeman look like a total fool. Freddie Freeman.

Helsley is one of the best closers in baseball. Not perfect, but who is. Currently the Cardinals are in contention for a spot in the tournament. Trade deadline will be interesting if they are still in contention.

Helsley and Fedde were not available this offseason. As Mo said it was Arenado,Arenado and Arenado. Various media reports were that Cards were not entertaining trade requests on anyone except Arenado and as such were not negotiating with other teams on Helsley or Fedde.
