I found no enjoyment in this weird post. I hope you're doing ok, have a nice TuesdayMelville wrote: ↑01 Apr 2025 08:48 am For several years I have provided perfect branding to many Cardinal players and executives, to explain and capture the key to understanding the role each played.
Super Slo Mo
The Paper Tyler
Lars The Human Sushi-baar
The Poser
WoeBegone
The Baseball Clown
The Marmot
Jack Patches
Yad-"I" (only late in his career)
Toxic Twins
The Unicorn
Others.
After watching yesterday's game, and a certain high arcing, slow arriving throw to second base, it is time to reveal another.
But first, a choice must be made between 2 worthy appellations.
And so, for the first time, I will put it to a vote before the final determination.
Shall it be Eephus Herrera?
Or Hail Mary Herrera?
I am leaning toward the latter but will consider the ballot returns before applying the perfect branding.

Re: BRANDING ALERT!
Paper Tyler is plenty short enough for a fan nickname. No it's not something his buddies are going to call him, it may be too long for that.(although I could definitely see "Paper" as a shortened version if your friends were ruthless like that) Babe Ruth was "The Great Bambino" or "The Sultan of Swat" longer nicknames like that are pretty common.sdaltons wrote: ↑01 Apr 2025 09:54 amThe O'Neill one is dumb as it gets. Nicknames should be short and snappy. They should come out of the mouth easier, or at least as easy, as the person's actual name. No one would call him that out loud to friends and be able to expect them to understand the reference.Mr Nice Guy wrote: ↑01 Apr 2025 09:45 amThe Paper Tyler was pretty good. It's both a play on paper tiger:
But it also describes his fragility, as if he's made of paper.pa·per ti·ger
/ˌpāpər ˈtīɡər/
noun
a person or thing that appears threatening but is ineffectual.
I also feel like Yad-I is pretty accurate for Molina's attitude his last few seasons (and I say that as a person who was a huge Yadi fan until his attitude became grating me at the end of his career)
It's why for that player, I liked O'Kneill. Doesn't really affect the pronunciation but it's a subtle change that accurately describes something about the player.
Yad-I is ok I guess, if you would actually say it that way out loud. Laughed at ME-ville describing someone else as selfish though.
Several of them on the list are so generic that it wouldn't be possible for someone not privy to the conversation to understand who was being talked about. That makes an inside joke, maybe, but not a nickname.
The problem with "O'Kneill" is it only works in text & it doesn't describe the player as fully as "Paper Tyler" does. Sure Tyler K'd a lot, but a big part of his failure was also injuries, "Paper Tyler" addresses both his struggles hitting the ball & his struggles to stay on the field. It's pretty clever as far as nicknames go.
I agree with the rest, they're all pretty generic, but I have to give him credit for those 2, I've always found them funny.
As far as Melville, I agree Me-ville is the perfect nickname. And I say that as someone who generally thinks Melville is an OK poster, but he's definitely full of himself so Me-ville works perfectly.

Re: BRANDING ALERT!
How or why does a player become a catcher……maintain the position all the way to MLB…..and can’t throw??
The man can hit….play 1b….play LF….DH

Re: BRANDING ALERT!
You could make some nicknames by making an anagram from their name;
Ivan Herrera could be Rivera Herna.
Ivan Herrera could be Rivera Herna.

Re: BRANDING ALERT!
That is pretty good!
I am officially adding that to the ballot.
Eephus Herrera
Hail Mary Herrera
Hang Time Herrera

Not at all
I merely thought after all my great success at branding, it would be a gracious gesture on my part to open it up to others
Glad I did.
There have been a couple of solid additions
This is going to be a close call
Re: BRANDING ALERT!
These 2 are in the final bracket.
The kid can hit. How about, The Iváninator
But Herrera still should not have been subbed out last night. Taking his bat out of the fifth spot collapsed the lineup.

In this case, however, I’m discussing baseball, therefore “Eephus” is the correct term in my mind.

Re: BRANDING ALERT!
I'm going with either Hang Time Herrera or Air-rerera.
Not because your little name game is funny or amusing in any way. But because your entire CT role is taking the ideas of others and appropriating them as your own. So in reality, you have no option but to choose one of those. The only question is, how long before you claim the choice were your idea in the first place?

Re: BRANDING ALERT!
If you've seen Night at the Museum, you'll know that "Ivan the Terrible" was really "Ivan the Awesome."
So one of those.

Re: BRANDING ALERT!
Eephus was the first word which occured to me at the time of the throw (the latest of many) and it neatly replaced "Ivan".WeeVikes wrote: ↑01 Apr 2025 11:42 amIt’s only and always about the game.Melville wrote: ↑01 Apr 2025 08:48 am For several years I have provided perfect branding to many Cardinal players and executives, to explain and capture the key to understanding the role each played.

You make a great point that from a baseball perspective the word is most appropriate
But given how low Herrera' success rate is, "Hail Mary" is also fitting
And given how long the middle infielders patiently wait for the ball to arrive, "hang time" is darn funny!
Going to be a difficult decision

Sarcastically you could call him Rope. Or laser. Or clothesline.
