It was horrible baserunning in this case.
Totally disagree. By taking the base he assured no play at the plate. Run scored.
That's what I thought. Though with Church running was there doubt he would score?

But yes, we have seen other times when a baserunner seemingly makes a blunder when in fact they are sacrificing themselves to ensure the run scores.

Now Rodriguez just did this very thing for the Reds.

if he picks up the win, it may be a double digit HIT line score off of him. I can live with that....if he gets the win
Yea but I think it was Dave Duncan said sometimes you can tell more about a pitcher when he doesn’t have his good stuff than when he has his best stuff. Which made since when I first heard it because the good pitchers when they don’t have their best stuff they still can navigate their way through a game and give you a chance. Last year pallante mikolas and fedde had to have every thing working perfectly to give u six and if anything was off it was a disaster. This year pallante has been able to still turn in decent starts when he hasn’t had his best stuff a huge step forward for him
yeah...and I can live with it if he gets the win...looks like he's holding it so far...stranding a TON of runners.

it would help if his offense would back him up a bit more tonight.
They got him that inning I shouldn’t have posted anything. lol 6 innings 4 runs not bad when he was getting hit as hard as he was

SMH
RBI hits from two guys not hitting their weight.
Pallante not as sharp tonight. Need to bail him out!

Per Chip, Torres “e-mailed” the throw. Lol

Because you were already in scoring position when you were at 2B.

... and giving away outs in the middle of an offensive rally is hugely counter productive.

1st and 3rd, 2 out: 0.48 expected runs
1st and 2nd, 2 out: 0.42 expected runs
1st, 3 out: 0.00 expected runs

If you go for 3rd and make it, you have accomplished very little: 0.06 expected runs = 0.48 - 0.42
If you go for 3rd and get caught, you completely killed the rally and the pitcher heartily thanks you.

Also, if the Reds thought they had a good chance of getting the runner at home, obviously they would have thrown home. They would not choose to concede the run to fall behind 4-1 and instead try to get the runner at 3rd instead. This play only is smart if there is a significant chance the runner would have been out going home. However, if that was the case, then why did you send the runner home?

Don't send: 1st and 2nd and 3rd, 2 out: 0.96 expected runs but you haven't scored that 4th run yet.
Send and out: 1st and 2nd, 3 out: 0.00 expected runs

So getting yourself thrown out at 3rd gains you 0.04 runs... unless that runner was going to be safe at home anyway.
So the defense is only gunning down the runner at 3B if they think the runner going home is probably going to be safe.

This is just the way I see it.

At this point keeping Torres around is just an act of benevolence.

...Is the OF grass wet from the earlier rain? Also, his 1st time playing in Cincy, so unfamiliar with the sight lines yet possibly.

Pallante giving up lots of hard contact in the 6th - Reds tie it up.
