Agreed. I think depending on prospects for the core of your team is a fool's errand. You get premium talent by signing or trading for it and then you fill in with the young guys in the minors. Maybe you develop a star every now and then.

No he’s not. He forgets during those times the GMs knew okay we have the best catcher and pitcher handler in baseball and the best hitter in baseball so we have that. They also had carp and Waino two top of the rotation pitchers so easy to flesh out a rotation around them and even if one was out like in 2011 with wano you still had an ace with the other easy to build around that who was the core he was supposed to spend money around this season? And the answer to "well, look at these prospects who failed" isn't having fewer prospects, it is acquiring MORE prospect such that, even if X% of them fail, you still achieve the critical mass of young players that you need for your ML roster. But the better job you do at evaluating which prospects to acquire and developing prospects, your X% will be lower.

And the lower your ML payroll is going to be, the greater that critical mass of young players is going to be.

That’s the fact they willfully ignore so they can continue to whine and complain. They think the current farm system is the same as the past farm system and say see it failed and that’s just a dumb comparison. It’s no longer Joshua Baez has to pop and be an impact 30-40 home run middle of the order bat or the team is doomed like when it was taveras has to turn into the guy or you derail the team for years to come. No it’s if baez doesn’t pop you have Rodriguez and you have Cho and you have Jesus Baez and a lot of other prospects coming who all good be big middle of the order pop and all you need is one of them to hit. Then you can look outside and spend on a good 6 and 7 hitter instead of trying to spend most of your payroll on one middle of the order bat. Look at what happened when taveras didn’t make it they had to trade two future top of the rotation pitchers for ozuna. The Cardinals aren’t in that predicament even if Baez fails
