I would think the Devils would not be too happy about this getting out…

It was definitely Cullen they were talking about jumping, not Lawrence. Lawrence dropped from his position earlier in the year whereas Cullen rose quite a bit.

Very stoic group; at the end DA was congratulating everyone on a great job and draft, and crickets, lol. They didn’t get very high on anyone in this video, but that could be a virtue in that they have realistic expectations. This scouting group has earned our trust so far, IMO, and DA was really pushing them on defending the Dagenais ranking and pick; I guess we’ll find out in 4 years if our guys made the correct, gutsy call.

I didn't much care for the Dagenais pick myself but it's the kind of swing you can afford to take after drafting a surefire natural center like Lawrence. The D-men still available at 16 weren't worth taking there IMO, so they went with a guy a few scouts really loved. We shall see how that one plays out. I'm highly confident Lawrence plays in the league for a good long time. I honestly have no good read on Dagenais.

It was definitely Cullen they were discussing. Army didn’t seem convinced.

I actually don’t think they were talking about Cullen. They mentioned the player had let his team in scoring as a 16yr old in the ushl. Lawrence played for the lumberjacks as a 16yr old and led the team in scoring. Then they mentioned the player being hurt and then going to BU and it seemed like they thought since he played better at the end of season that it was because he was finally fully recovered from the injury at end of season. Just my take on it. I felt like Lawrence was their guy, but I’m sure Cullen was in the mix. I honestly wanted Cullen, but now I am glad they got Lawrence. The more I read about him the more I love. I also think dagenais ends up a top 6 winger who can fill in at center as needed. Love what they did this year at the draft.
We’re talking about 2 different things. Feltran said a guy grew a bunch before the season and could be a star. Army seemed unimpressed by it. That was Cullen. The 16 yr old they talked about after was definitely Lawrence.

For the record, and on the record, I love the Dagenais pick.

$#%& the mocks. Trust in Feltrin. And our scouts.

Just now watched it. Here are a few random thoughts and questions...

- The consensus on Lawerence was pretty unanimous. Nice call by Walt getting him at 11.

- Who do we think were the biggest proponents of Dagenais in the circle? Was Feltrin one?

- How much scouting / tape does Big Walt do? His championing of Scott Perunovoch a few years back soured me on his evaluation skills, so someone educate me on why Armstrong and now Steen value his opinion so highly that he got another promotion.

- Tony Feltrin looked like he was about to get a colonoscopy in most his camera time. I thought I had seen a clip circulating before the draft on Twitter of Feltrin predicting stardom for someone, but I couldn't find it. I guess he was talking about Cullen. Do we think he was happy with the overall draft results? His opinion I value.

- I'd also be curious if anyone got any vibe on someone in the circle who wasn't on board with the acquisition of McTavish?

I was disappointed that we didn’t get to learn what they had for the lunch they all laughed about.

Drill down on this, Pierre. What did you see to made you come to this conclusion?

I was wondering if Belchetz was ever on their radar, but obviously not above Dags.

They mentioned a Fin while they were talking about Dagenais. That has to be Suvanto.

UMR-alum-05 wrote: 02 Aug 2026 11:53 am I don't think the scouting team and Feltrin were too happy to trade two of the picks. Definitely not to trade 15. But hey that's life in the big city. I was kind of shocked at how quickly they blew off doing the 12 and 35 for 15 and 29 option. They obviously were never high of Gustaffson or Command or they'd have made that trade. In fairness, after already taking Lawrence maybe there were high on Command but didn't see the need to double up. My comment on Gus I think rings true. They easily could have had him and didn't want to do it whatsoever.
Great catch, UMR. They obviously didn't rank Gustaffson in the same tier as the Top D's or they would have taken him.

I was looking for a reaction when Rudolph was taken and there really wasn't one, so I assume they expected him to go before 11.

Didn't Niemiec also seem like he was pushing for Dagenais?

I would think Big Walt would be important on the pro side as well.
You know he gets the opinions of his 2 boys about the players they play against.

If I was Army & now Steen, I would call Walt and ask him to get some inside intel from Matt & Brady before trading for an NHL player (particularly from the eastern conference).
They can tell you if a player is easy or difficult to play against.
Veteran NHL players know who the hard (donkey)(bleep) and the softies are in the league especially for board and puck battles.
Having that kind of intel that you might not be able to always pick up on at the press box level in comparison to first hand on ice knowledge is invaluable.

I figured they were referring to Oscar Hemming and not Suvanto, but it could have been either player.

As for Perunovich it was both Big Walt and J. Niemec. They convinced Bill Armstrong to get out and see Perunovich. Bill said they weren’t interested because he had already passed through the draft twice. Walt and Niemec persisted, Armstrong went and watched him several times and mentioned that they fell in love with Perunovich, so much so that that actually chased him in the draft to make sure they got him.
Perunovich was worth of of being drafted, sometimes players just don’t work out as in his case but he was a dynamic player in college.

Walt says when discussing Dagenais “I get the need for the center man ” which would be Suvanto.
