Re: Quinn Mathew’s debut stats
All in all, not perfect but very nice. Too many walks, two to lead off innings. Didn't look overwhelmed and pitched out jams.
No reason for Oli to let him see another hitter in the 6th, let him feel good about a two runs in five innings debut. Almost three in five+ and so easily avoidable.
Speaking of Oli, how 'bout Walker back to 3 or 4-hole and auditioning more bullpen arms from Memphis.

I thought he was very impressive. I was disappointed a couple of times that Dusty Blake did come out and slow things down. Just another failure in coaching in my opinion.

Dont know about his stats, but love his release point and posture, for some reason reminds me of the 60s.

I am don't understand why Blake doesn't come out for his pitchers and give them a breather more often. I am sure it has to be Marmol and Blake but so many times this year I have watched a young cardinal pitcher struggle during a inning and no Blake.

The Toronto radio announcers also questioned why Blake didn’t come out to try and settle him down at one point.

Re: Quinn Mathew’s debut stats
He was fine.
Some good, some not so good.
I wouldn't be so profound to conclude his future from just today but a couple of things I paid attention to.
Fastball velocity - Just fine. Nothing at all wrong with 93=95.
Not a lot of command on the fastball. Command being throwing effective strikes and not just strikes.
He thew a couple of really good curve balls so I'll wait to see the future on that pitch but if he can throw the good ones more often that's an effective pitch.
Slider had very little movement on it and to me and he will need that to be a difference make.
Changeup was not good or bad.
He looked like he belonged in that environment for sure so that is good.
I have zero advance metrics to back any of that up but that's what the eyeball told me.

Re: Quinn Mathew’s debut stats
I didn’t get a chance to see it, but I know Toronto is a tough team to strikeout (2nd to last in strikeouts in MLB), which is one of his strengths. So to come away with a start where he gave up only 2 runs over 5 IP is a very solid first outing.

Torontos Sirius xm announcers summed it up really well. Loved his confidence and “Stuff” with a few control negatives. They were very impressed.

Re: Quinn Mathew’s debut stats
The thinking of leaving him in there, in my opinion, was to give him a chance at a win instead of taking the sure loss in his debut.OregonRedbird wrote: ↑01 Aug 2026 17:58 pm All in all, not perfect but very nice. I didn’t see the game, but it looks like he pitched pretty well.

Re: Quinn Mathew’s debut stats
Quinn Mathews production kept the Cards in the game; Gastelum put the game out of reach for the floundering offense, yet it's Mathews that's credited with the Loss and Gastelum skates without acknowledgement for his poor performance other than that he's steaming forward with a 7.94 ERA.

So did his outing today help his ERA?bartleby the scrivener wrote: ↑01 Aug 2026 22:39 pm Quinn Mathews production kept the Cards in the game; Gastelum put the game out of reach for the floundering offense, yet it's Mathews that's credited with the Loss and B]Gastelum skates without acknowledgement for his poor performance other than that he's steaming forward with a 7.94 ERA.[/B]
