duce, why are these ERA's so darn high? Working on stuff? Too many BB's? Both?

duce, why are these ERA's so darn high? Working on stuff? Too many BB's? Both?
A) Mental problems at the wrong time...."in the moment mental fortitude"

B) low pitch counts, 2 or 3 runs in the first inning, out by the 3rd inning. That'll lend to high ERA's every single year.

C) Bad fielding will do it too. In A+ the throw from 3B seems to be terrifically hard to do. And the range of most of these 3B is terrifically bad. OF throwing to the wrong base, or overgunning it HP, allowing runners to move up. Infielders who can't catch balls in foul ground (this happens ALOT....they're not used to the slight summer breezes that will take a ball and do devil magic with it)

D) Bad umpiring, really bad umpiring. You have to remember that it's the Minor Leagues for these young umpires, too. And A+ and AA don't have the aid of ABS. And only 3 or 4 umpires a year make it to the Majors...so you have to imagine that over 85% of the minor league umpires aren't great strike/ball callers.

E) Most pitchers are just minor leaguers, and you have to accept that they'll throw like Minor Leaguers. Most are fighting control issues...if they can master them, they'll be golden...but they'll give you terrible ERA's in the process.

F) and lastly, a lot these guys are made to pitch to contact to help ramp up their arm usage/PC/innings...that's what Franklin is doing right now...they have him in the zone, not dancing around it.

------

you have to sift through the "Who's good, Who's bad". Usually if the pitcher is going 85 or more pitches, then his ERA is usually lower...he's not working on anything other than waiting for a call up, IE: Jacob Odle...his stuff is perfected enough at A+, that he's ramped up to Major League usage (85-100 PC)....Franklin is on a tight PC around 65-75, probably for the next season, too.

--------------------

So...let's take today's pitchers...this is my opinion, but it's based off of millions of minutes of watching.

Hansen....he's earned that 5.21 ERA. He's a soft tossing throw back...much of the pro batters know how to hit that type of pitcher, and hit it hard....he's BP at best in the majors. I called that back in Peoria/Springfield

Lin...a lot of movement on his pitches, so gets too many walks. ALSO, with Lin in particular, he tends to blow up when things go awry in an inning...he is his own worst enemy at that time. The next inning, he has regrouped and pitching like he should...but his PC has ballooned b/c of one inning.

Franklin...he's using his talent and pitches the best he can as he slowly puts miles on the arm. He was a reliever in college and the end of highschool. This is stated process by Bloom...they're going slow with him. ERA isn't looked at with him...good thing for him, he's had several Stats-Worthy starts in a row and his ERA has gone down....so that's big bonus for the Organization and Fans.

Crossland...control, control, control....fabulous LHP, has the looks and makings of a Mathews...but he lacks the control that Mathews had out of college. He's like a worse version of Braden Davis right now....but you can see the promise, hopefully he gets that control under "control"

Crav -- here's a useless question, do the stats not hit the books until this game is over or did the partial stats already get counted?

i suggested useless or at least less meaningful since this game started yesterday --- but if they were resuming a game from say 6 weeks ago i guess the same would apply?

same would apply. Any stats that happened sit in purgatory until the resumption and conclusion of the game. Sucks for fans keeping tabs on their favorite player and seeing their stats are short a HR or a Hit when they know they got one.
