They should try to extend Walker. He has finally begun playing to the level of his elite physical tools. I could see the Walker camp with a $200mm figure in mind but the Cards would offer much less. I doubt the two sides will reach an extension.

That was over maybe 40 games or so.
Now he's coming back to reality.
Pitchers and the league figured him out.
Still a lousy defender or average at best.
Probably a LT DH candidate.
No way I'm giving this person 200M contract.
Doesn't have the mental fortitude either.

I'm likely going to try and sign the following LT:

1. Burleson-Consistently good.
2. Winn-You can bank on the D and hope he continues to improve the bat.

That's it.
There are no worthy players to sign LT here.
The rebuild is showing little talent thus far.
And the pitchers are generally all hacks too.
Gonna be a long, long decade of [shirt] baseball.
What do you mean by saying that he doesn't have the mental fortitude?
Yeah, that one caught my attention too. If anything, this guy struggled for 2 years. Stuck with it and has come out as core piece for this team to build around.

Questioning whether he’s worth $200m is fair. Questioning his “mental fortitude” is an ignorant take.

56 games of great, now 52 games of 700 OPS.

I need to see a recovery and not believe it was a heater that a player can go, on before reverting back to what they normally are..

Then there's his D. 38th in MLB OFers in outs above average

For sure but it's pretty normal for guys to go through slumps and his 200 million dollar assessment is stupid. Hopefully he doesn't go back to being one of the worst players in the game. People are jumping the gun on the whole mvp thing for sure.

How long is a slump? 56 games of 900+ OPS, now 53 of 700 OPS.

Either way, no big contract, regardless.

He's slumping and pressing. He has very little protection in the lineup, yet he's probably your best bat and he's still young and learning. Yeah, I give him the long term contract. If he continues to hit the way that got him to the all-star team then you have a great deal and if he falls off of a cliff, well, you took a gamble, just as you do with every (drat) signing you ever commit to.
Protection is a myth. I think he will work thru this. Will he be a 900 OPS hitter? I sure hope so...but I'm not locking him up for $200 million
Common sense tells you that protection is not a myth. Would you walk Harrison Bader to face Albert Pujols? No, you'd challenge Bader. That's just plain stupidity to say otherwise, I don't care where you read it. When he consistently carries .900 OPS you won't be able to sign him because the Dodgers or Yankees will step in. Like the Angels did for Pujols. Over 8 years that's around $25 million a year for a cleanup hitter. I'd do that deal every day.

No, the gray matter supposedly between your ears is a myth. Batting order protection is common sense. My god, they walked Barry Bonds with the bases loaded because they were afraid of his bat. Your stance is unsupportable.

Burleson consistently falls off in the second half and consistently can’t hit LHP. Sell high, last chance.

Masyn Winn is worth keeping if he’ll take a team friendly extension. Love the defense and arm but he’s a liability on offense or at best league average.

20+ a year for Jordan Walker is too much at this point. The risk is he has a strong year next year and the price skyrockets. Wetherholt money would start the conversation right now, and if offered a little more he might take the long term security.

It's obvious he is still proving himself and for this, heck no! Quick fact... Walker is projected to reach free agency around 2030, after completing his team-controlled arbitration years.

If I can't extend Walker, I'm trading him for the best return I can get.

$200M is too much? What's the price that works.

I want to keep Walker. RH power bats that can play in the field are at a premium. And he seems like a good kid and positive teammate.

Mental fortitude questions are nonsense. He's progressed despite what cardinals under development system and too quick promotion did. He's strong and resilient.
And nobody beats the King! Classic episode.
About Walker, his agent will not let him sign for JJ money as he is much closer to FA big bucks than JJ was. It will take much more than JJ's contract IMO.

Aug 1,2027 yes to new contract. NO to $200M, realistic $120M over 6 or 7 yrs.

If they (mentally deficient Marmot and his mental voices) keep playing roulette with JW and placement in batting order it will become difficult to determine his value.
