54-54 & 54 1/3 of season left

Post by ramfandan »

The Cardinals enter play this 7/30 with a 54/54 record and have exactly 54 games remaining (1/3 of Cardinals season remaining )

Whether you are optimistic or pessimistic on the chances of snaring a wildcard spot , here are some numbers as to where the WC teams stand in the N.L for those 3 WC spots.

The Cubs are 61-47 and in the No. 1 spot currently with a 4 1/2 game lead ( 5 up on the loss side on both the D'Backs and Phillies
Those two teams are playing . 523 baseball which for 162 games translates to 84.7 wins ( round it up to 85 wins for the last wildcard spot IF w-l % continues at the present rate.
Note: It may take a couple more wins by someone to claim the last spot.

Looking at just the 'loss' column, after the Phillies/ D'Backs with 52 losses, the next group is Padres 53 losses with Pirates, Marlins, Nats, and Cardinals all tied with 54 losses.
So as we sit today , the Cardinals are 2 back on the loss side. The tough part is though just 2 back there are 4 teams you must climb over that also have 54 losses plus the Padres at 53. Then you must do better than the D'Backs or Phillies to leapfrog them also.
Note " While I am not up to speed on the season tiebreakers currently , correct me if I am wrong , but didn't the D'backs in that final game win take the series head -to- head series the tie breakerson a 2-way tie.

With the trade deadline looming in just 4 more days, most teams will look somewhat different for the final 50 games. For the Cardinals, many speculate that Baez may be called up post trade deadline. Other teams in the WC hunt will look to improve their look on Aug. 3rd

So there are the numbers... Your thoughts on the final 1/3 ??

Stay the present course which focuses on the young guys:
Walker has arrived as has JJ.
Is Noot dealt?
Still evaluating- Church, Torres, Velasquez etc etc
On the cusp- Bernal and Baez
Rotation- McGreevy/Pallante/Leahy have been solid.
May dealt?> Dobbins/Mathews? Libby to the BP?
BP- yes it has been a mess but this could be the area where Bloom finds opportunities? Could be a lot of arms available?

Velazquez is not part of the future.
Cards don't think Torres is either.

That was my preseason guess. I think I was a little low. Just a little.
