Watching Don Mattingly discuss Bryce Harper's comments is a great example of what a confident, respected manager looks like. He speaks with conviction, isn't defensive, and projects the kind of presence that comes from a lifetime of baseball knowledge, credibility, and accomplishment. Whether you agree with every decision he makes or not, there is no questioning that he commands respect.

To me, that's the polar opposite of what we've seen from Oli Marmol.

Too often, Oli comes across as insecure when he's challenged. You can see it in some of his responses to difficult questions from the media, in the way he discusses conflict, and in his overall demeanor. At times, it feels like he's trying too hard to be one of the guys instead of embracing the role of being the leader of the clubhouse.

There's a big difference between being liked and being respected. The best managers are usually both. They build strong relationships with players, but they also establish clear expectations and hold everyone accountable. Players may not always enjoy those difficult conversations in the moment, but they respect the consistency and leadership behind them.

That's what I believe the Cardinals are missing. The clubhouse doesn't need another friend. It needs a leader whose confidence, baseball acumen, and presence naturally command respect, while still earning the trust and support of the players.

I've been trying to point this out for over two years too basil.

Oli is what he is.....................a minor league Manager w/a minor league Manager's mentality.

I’ll bet Bryce doesn’t like the way he handled it lol he kind of took shots at him. If a cardinals player said the team needs help and oli said that player is the only one who thinks that he doesn’t know where the organization is and he’s trying to spend other people’s money there would be calls for olis head for taking shots at a player who just wants the team improved. I thought mattingly handled it pretty poorly

But at the same time if he sides with one player he’s basically leaving 25 others wondering if their manager is joining in with Harper throwing shade at them essentially insinuating they are not good enough and want them off the team.

I get this is the bigs and protecting feelings should be somewhat lower on a managers to do list but that could cause some clubhouse animosity in the heat of a playoff race

So you think Harper is the only one who doesn’t think the team is perfect and doesnt need any help? lol any player that thinks that is an idiot or lying. And mattingly could have simply said Harper is a super competitive guy and wants the best team possible and left it at that but he took it upon himself to say no other players think that Harper doesn’t know the organization wants to play GM and wants to spend other people’s money just crazy stuff that he came at him like that and trashed him in public

No of course not. What I’m saying is it’s one thing for a player to throw the team under a bus, it’s another thing for the manager to do it was well. You don’t just publicly come out and say something along the lines of”I wish we had better players” or “I wish certain players on the team would be replaced” and just expect said roster to handle it positively?


And why is it ok for Harper to trash the team publicly, butt Mattingly can’t trash Harper publicly, but Mattingly can agree/brush off Harper trashing the team Publicly? You should quit with the goal post tactic while it’s early enough
