Re: Masyn Winn
This is all just made up silly talk with some quotes taken out of context for good measure. Nobody is going to put up the necessary return for Winn and they have no one to replace him if they did. If they don't extend him you can get all lathered up about a trade this time next year if they aren't in contention for a real playoff spot.

Trading him is silly.
However, I would bench him next game and make him watch his last two ABs on a loop until he realizes how terrible his approach was. Just not ML at bats whatsoever.

His average mph on hit balls is one of the lowest in the league, which makes sense. When he swings he steps in the bucket with his back foot. How do how get any power if you move your plant foot? If you watch others in the league they basically grind their back foot into the ground when they swing. That’s where they get leverage. I can’t believe he hasn’t corrected that or someone hasn’t pointed it out (coach). I don’t think he will ever get to .275+ unless he can correct that.

So for his career, which is still relatively short, Winn has averaged a +3.4 WAR per 162 at a key defensive position.
That's a keeper while cost controlled and a great value to the team.

Re: Masyn Winn
I do not think anyone on these forums doubts what Winn brings to the table defensively. He has a GG after all. The bat is the issue. I also do not think it is out of line for fans to ask for and expect that players be two way players at the MLB level. They have to bring both and not just one of the facets to the game. Until they are that complete player then their replacement should always be sought in the form of trade or the minors. Not every player has to hit .270+ and be GG caliber defensively. History shows that is near impossible to achieve, but as long as you have 3 to 4 that do it, the rest are compliments to that tandem. It does not mean the team should not be evaluating every player and trying to improve the position. There are only 9 on the field at a time. It should be the 9 best the team can do.
Winn and Walker are going to be problems moving forward in the sense that they both have struggled immensely and been stars in the next moment. They are also best friends and you better believe they talk to each other. Decisions will need to be made on both. Personally, I feel if Winn is in fact feeling dissed a bit because JJ got a deal before him, then he needs to check his attitude and the team would be best served selling on him now while he has value. As with any deal however it is always determined by the return of the trade or if someone in the minors is pushing the issue. The Cards are likely not going to get a return of a good hitting SS or 2B with a decent glove at this time unless something else is included. I think the front office will not want to trade off their GG SS in the middle of a season also without an immediate new shiny toy to show off. So what are the chances Winn is dealt...... less than 5% I would say at this point. But they should put him on notice behind closed doors that no other players contract should ever affect his mind set as this is a business and he needs to worry about his own rear end, end of story. They will deal with this issue once the ARB years start and they are past the 2027 lockout.

What MW's back leg is doing isn't totally weird. The fact that it moves behind him a little on some swings is. Why does he do this? It's probably a subconscious thing to compensate for his front half flying open.
Maybe he should consider adopting a closed stance so his feet are already staggered.

It looks like his 2024 to current 2026 metrics have been going down each year.
I think his defense is right at the top two in MLB and this also shows a decline in advanced metrics.
The declining offensive metrics really concern me.
I wouldn't want to lock him in with a 6 to 8 year extension until we see a significant reversal of the current trend.
I think this needs to happen in 2027 and then front office can make a decision on extension.
It Winn seems to be in a funk mentally next year then maybe he won't provide enough offense.
I think we have some good shortstops in the pipeline.
Let him go thru ARB's
I'd like to see him dealt for a starting pitcher any time during the next two years.

ozzie smith is irrelevant. not everyone follows ozzies career trajectory. winn is trending downward offensively.PanamaCardFan wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 22:30 pm Ozzie Smith had a career 66 OPS+ when the Cardinals traded for him. He had a 93 OPS+ for the Cardinals before finishing with a career 87.
bringing up ozzies offense is dumb ciz its like- hey once this one player suddenly got better who was bad at offense so therefore this bad player who is declining offensively will improve and have a hof career
umm.. what? the logic makes no sense. far more ppayers with declining offense continue declining. a player declining since first full season i dont see as likely to suddenly improve. id compare winn more to brendan ryan than to ozzie smith. and brendan ryan got run out of town once his ops was below .600 despite gold glove defense.

Re: Masyn Winn
See how many minor-league arms the Braves will give up for Winn, then prepare for a future with lots more base hits allowed to the left side.
Or send him to Driveline. Hell, send the whole team. No guarantees but wth not?
