What's it like being that slow to understand what was spelled out going into the season?

Keep getting lathered up...it's weirdly entertaining.
Bloom heading into the season. “We’re not conceding anything and winning is always the objective”
Now its “next window to win 2028”
You're comparing what Bloom said to what The Athletic is saying he is saying.

And those were public facing statements, not what he expects. He's not going to tell the fans in February that they're not planning to be competitive.

There is no way Bloom looked at the roster over the winter and legitimately though they could compete over 162. If he did, then he needs to get replaced. The writing was on the wall. And, did you explicitly hear Bloom say they aren't planning to compete until 2028, did the Athletic attribute a quote to him, or is it a guy hearing through the grapevine? It sounds like you're getting worked up over hearsay

Wow thats impressively dumb even for bowden
I know…..you want to lose….for at least a couple more years…..then we can win
You realize that they could win even if they trade some players away, right?

The players they could trade:

Dustin May: 5-7 4.59 ERA
Stanek: 4.46 ERA
Herrera: .739 OPS
Nootbaar: .719 OPS
Replace Libby in the rotation

Those aren’t world beating numbers.

And I don’t know how you can look at the Cardinals roster right now and truly think they could be a contender.
How? By replacing all the expired payroll from the past 5 years. You have to build it first so they will come.

Goldy
Nado
Pujols DH
Yadi/Willson
Wainwright/Gray
Mikolas (not that he was worth it but still $$$)
various bullpen pieces including Matz
Helsley at Arb rates

That's a lot of salary that we "can" afford as recent history shows. Bring those level of players back in along with keeping the right core and adding in our top draft picks and we are immediate contenders next year.
Their current "core" isn't good enough to compete next year.

They still need to develop two, young, cost controlled, front of rotation SPs (McGreevy isn't one), and then probably spend to add a third.
What's your threshold then? Dobbins/Fitts? Or are they just B.O.R. filler?

Then there's a non-zero chance we manage to develop a very very good half of a lineup (Walker Burly JJW etc) and waste that accomplishment if we somehow fail to develop/select the right pitchers and they suddenly reach their primes in the next 2.5 years. Is Matthews somehow going to be one? Because we don't have a Skenes or even a Wacha in the system. Keep seeing Doyle is maybe bullpen bound. And most everyone else isn't close and isn't moving fast either.
They will need some of Doyle, Mathews, Franklin, Clarke, Cijntje, Fajardo, or others who they acquire by selling off now to develop into those FOR starters.

If you are going to have any chance at all against the Dodgers, Brewers, Braves, Phillies, Yankees, etc. in short postseason series, you need at least two and probably three real FOR SPs.

The Cardinals have a bunch of #3s to #5s, but no one to even begin to match up against a Misiorowski/Harrison, Sanchez/Luzardo/Wheeler, Yamamoto/Ohtani, Sale, etc.
We have pitchers that can go 5-6 innings and usually keep the team in the game.
The teams and pitchers you mentioned usually go 6-7. So, basically it comes down to bullpens. Especially in the playoffs.
The Cardinals have a ways to go there, and DeWitt has NEVER liked paying for bullpen pieces.

They need to develop two young, cost controlled, front of rotation SPs and that probably doesn't happen until late 2027 or 2028.

Expecting them to be rebuilt by 2027 was always likely to be expecting too much.

I'm only slightly surprised that Romero isn't there with May and Stanek. Otherwise I would agree that they don't have to trade anybody else right now.
I’d love to see them acquire one of the P trading Winn
Well, FWIW, mlb.com's ETA for some of the Cardinals pitching prospects:

Mathews - 2026
Cjintje - 2026
Doyle - 2027
Clarke - 2027
Fajardo - 2028
Franklin - 2028
Also, I think they need at least two mid/top of rotation prospects added to that list to really be ready.

What do you think? Is there enough upside in that list to fill out a competitive rotation when considering pitching prospect attrition rates?

The 5-6 innings the Cardinals SPs would log against potent opposing offenses in the playoff isn't comparable to Misiorowski/Harrison, Sanchez/Luzardo/Wheeler, Yamamoto/Ohtani, Sale, etc. likely shutting down the Cardinals offense.

DeWitt isn't going to spend. He has decided to go cheap. The rebuild angle is his cover. This rebuild could take place along with contending. Spending for two bullpen arms and one bat wouldn't break him. In fact, it makes more financial sense. More wins = more attendance = more cash.

Being cheap and losing is running off fans. Multiple years of it may be hard to overcome.
Which is really odd to me. If you look at the numbers, by not being competitive by spending on free agents, they are leaving more than $70m/year in revenue on the table. If they'd added just $50m in payroll this year, they would very likely be making $20m more this year alone. Now I do understand the idea of tearing the place down to its studs and rebuilding from there for long term competitive reason. What I don't understand, from a business profitability they could easily be making more money if they brought in one maybe two star players.

A bunch of us have been laying out the same players to trade w/the same time frame for many months.

C'mon GF, you know the plan.
I think y’all conveniently leave out the part where no one thought they would be. Leading the WC. Was that in the plan??? Who had that in the PLAN before the season? Please step forward. So the maybe you adapt the plan because the TEAM was beating the top of league. They were 1st in WC. As the Mets didn’t think they would be in last and are now selling….the Cards didnt think they would be 1st in WC so perhaps you dont let this young group on the vine and tell them to wait at least 2 more years. they played above their pay grade for 1 whole month...April. We're thrilled by that at the time, we're still thrilled by that. We haven't played over .500 ball since April.

you have a plan, if you play better than expected...great, but it wasn't expected to be sustainable...and guess what....it hasn't been sustainable...it's been 3 months since April...we're staying the course.

No one in their right mind makes trades to sustain something in April...you stay the course.

You've beaten better dead horses than this, GoldFan....now you're trying to look stupid. Pick a better dead horse.

No one thought they were going to be leading the Wildcard. If that were still the case the plan for the deadline may have shifted slightly. Do you seriously think they should be buying right now after the last few weeks of awful play?

They want to win. I believe that. But they want to do it with a barebones cheap roster. That's the real problem. He they are trying to construct a competitive roster on the cheap and it never really works.Cincy and Pit have been doing this dance for decades. They get one little window of a couple of years to make the playoffs maybe and then it's all over again for years. It's sickening that one of the crown jewels of the National League would subject their fan base to this philosophy. Teams that spend money win consistently. Teams that don't have to live on a prayer.

Players who won't be back even if they are not traded.

Dustin May: not worth his $20M mutual option and mutual options almost never get picked up.
Replace him with Quinn Mathews

JoJo Romero: free agent
Replace him with Brycen Mautz who has already moved to the Memphis bullpen

Ryne Stanek: $6M option but why would a team not competing pay a middle reliever $6M
Replace him with Peter Strzelecki

Ramon Urias: $4M option but why would a team not competing pay a backup infielder $4M
No need to replace a guy on the IL.

Players who you might want to trade now because there may be little opportunity to make trades during a lockout offseason.

Lars Nootbar: Not a "necessary" trade since he could increase his value with a good finish to 2026 but if some gives us value in return... for sale.
Replace him with Josh Baez

Players which who you might want to trade high:

Riley O'Brien: lots of control left but he's 31.5 years old already.
Jose Fermin: Very likeable but I'm not impressed with his glove or arm at all. The only place I like him is in CF against LHP.
Justin Bruihl: If something of value is offered in return, why not take it?
Pedro Pages: Good backup catcher, but no signs of life in the bat.
Nolan Gorman: Potential nontender so why not trade him?

Nice recap. And this isn't any different than it was on day 1 of the season. The only thing different now than the beginning of the season and that you didn't include is I would add Herrera and catching depth besides Pages to that last category.
