A Liam Doyle Bookend
A trade proposal with the Texas Rangers for a Liam Doyle Bookend. Target- AJ Russell. A 6'6' 22 year old second round draft pick for the Rangers last year, he is now pitching ain high A ball. What makes him a Liam Doyle bookend? Both 22, Liam LH- AJ RH. Russell has a 70 grade fastball and seems to be having all the same issues Doyle has been having. He hasn't made it through the 4th inning of any of his starts this season and is having command issues. He is ranked as the Rangers #3 prospect by MLB, but only #16 according to Fangraphs. Fangraphs also comments that he is looking more and more like a reliever. That may ultimately be Doyle's fate as well.
What do the Rangers need? They have 3 primary needs: Starting pitching as Jack Leiter has had ankle surgery, multiple bullpen pieces, and catching. Danny Jansen is having season ending elbow surgery and Kyle Higashioka is out indefinitely.
Rangers get: Pedro Pages (3.1) and JoJo Romero (1.7)
Cardinals get: AJ Russell (5)

I think the Cardinals would jump all over that deal.

Re: A Liam Doyle Bookend
I get it, but the Rangers are one of the few teams run by a former player. They do things differently than the suits. They're always ready to go for it, and tend to emphasize the major league roster at the expense of everything else. Their window is also closing.

Russell did attend University of Tennessee, so the Cardinals might overpay, or Manfred could force the Rangers to move him to STL, or Russell could ask for his release to sign with the Cardinals, or...

Ehhhh?
Would they give him up? JoJo on Il and is he a rental? Pages?
I think the guy is there #4 with ETA of 2028.
I’d do it it they would.

I've already traded May, Jo Jo, and a catcher to the Dodgers in my War Room. Hi end pitching prospect or OFer coming back. Depends on the catcher.
I am working on levering Holliday out of Baltimore today.
Good Luck in your parallel universe

I would rather see Ike Irish come back some how. Been high on him since draft day. Burleson replacement at 1st as I have read he is an average catcher. I like Burleson but he is going to cost a lot of money soon and not so sure he is the long term answer. I like the idea of the Doyle bookend but not sure Pages is the right guy to get it done. That might require Herrera instead.

We don't have a player we are trading to get this good of a prospect. May, Romero, and nootbar will get you some b or c level prospects. Russell is putting himself above that. Look at what we got for gray or Contreras and expect well less than that.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 11:14 am A trade proposal with the Texas Rangers for a Liam Doyle Bookend. I believe JoJo should be "eligible" to come off the IL either today or tomorrow. It was retroactive to 14 July and needs to be 15 days.
Not sure if he's ready to pitch but if he could throw effectively on Thu 30 Jul and Sat 01 Aug, it would boost his trade value.

He's not a top 100 prospect, heck Fangraphs doesn't even have him in the top 10 of a generally bad system. I'm probably reaching some on this one, but that's why trades aren't being finished right now- everyone is reaching. Start with an idea, see where it leads. Most lead nowhere, but the more often you cast your line, the more often you get something done. We only need one or two meaningful things to happen to have a really good deadline.clemonsonroots wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 14:15 pmWe don't have a player we are trading to get this good of a prospect. Why are we trading for closers? Starting pitching, that should be the focus.

As a fisherman, I disagree with "the more often you cast your line, the more you get something done." Simply not true. Your just doing more casting...Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 14:52 pmHe's not a top 100 prospect, heck Fangraphs doesn't even have him in the top 10 of a generally bad system.
