The plan” is for the #STLCards to trade Dustin May and Ryne Stanek at the deadline, according to The Athletic

Additionally, they will “explore interest” in Lars Nootbaar, Riley O’Brien and JoJo Romero. However, the club doesn’t feel pressure to trade any of the three

In return, they want “meaningful pieces” that fit Chaim Bloom’s timeline, which points to 2028 as the next competitive window”

Interesting Horsey……I recall Bloom before the season stating that he wasn’t conceding anything…..was looking for a SP in addition to MAY….and winning is always the objective.

I don’t recall him ever stating that ‘28 is the next competitive window

Just curious…..and this question goes out to all the “Fellas who know everything all along” what will be the excuse if the team doesn’t win in ‘28??
Have you thought out all the excuses for that?? Don’t worry you have time.
And just a reminder THIS club was leading the WC until a couple weeks ago.

You realize that they could win even if they trade some players away, right?

The players they could trade:

Dustin May: 5-7 4.59 ERA
Stanek: 4.46 ERA
Herrera: .739 OPS
Nootbaar: .719 OPS
Replace Libby in the rotation

Those aren’t world beating numbers.

And I don’t know how you can look at the Cardinals roster right now and truly think they could be a contender.
How? By replacing all the expired payroll from the past 5 years. You have to build it first so they will come.

Goldy
Nado
Pujols DH
Yadi/Willson
Wainwright/Gray
Mikolas (not that he was worth it but still $$$)
various bullpen pieces including Matz
Helsley at Arb rates

That's a lot of salary that we "can" afford as recent history shows. Bring those level of players back in along with keeping the right core and adding in our top draft picks and we are immediate contenders next year.
Their current "core" isn't good enough to compete next year.

They still need to develop two, young, cost controlled, front of rotation SPs (McGreevy isn't one), and then probably spend to add a third.
What's your threshold then? Dobbins/Fitts? Or are they just B.O.R. filler?

Then there's a non-zero chance we manage to develop a very very good half of a lineup (Walker Burly JJW etc) and waste that accomplishment if we somehow fail to develop/select the right pitchers and they suddenly reach their primes in the next 2.5 years. Is Matthews somehow going to be one? Because we don't have a Skenes or even a Wacha in the system. Keep seeing Doyle is maybe bullpen bound. And most everyone else isn't close and isn't moving fast either.

DeWitt isn't going to spend. He has decided to go cheap. The rebuild angle is his cover. This rebuild could take place along with contending. Spending for two bullpen arms and one bat wouldn't break him. In fact, it makes more financial sense. More wins = more attendance = more cash.

Being cheap and losing is running off fans. Multiple years of it may be hard to overcome.

Why are you ignoring all of the recent examples of rebuilding teams like the Cubs, Astros, Braves, and Phillies and how they went about it?

They will need some of Doyle, Mathews, Franklin, Clarke, Cijntje, Fajardo, or others who they acquire by selling off now to develop into those FOR starters.

If you are going to have any chance at all against the Dodgers, Brewers, Braves, Phillies, Yankees, etc. in short postseason series, you need at least two and probably three real FOR SPs.

The Cardinals have a bunch of #3s to #5s, but no one to even begin to match up against a Misiorowski/Harrison, Sanchez/Luzardo/Wheeler, Yamamoto/Ohtani, Sale, etc.

I’m certain the Mets(45-62) PLAN was to win this season………
Been watching MLB for 50yrs……you don’t sabotage a season where you ARE WINNING so that in 2-3 yrs when you say you will start winning
It don’t work like that.

But somehow the Great DeWitt has convinced you SMART baseball people exactly that. While he pay LOW payroll for 3-4 yrs
He could win this year but won’t pay…..he could win next year but won’t pay…..But 2028 with players no one knows how they’ll do in MLB…..that’s the time to win

How much winning has this team done this year? They couldn’t get over the 9 game over .500 hump. Only 4 teams in the NL have a worse record than us. We are closer to Colorado (worst record in baseball) than Milwaukee (division leader).

come on, GF. You're an intelligent person...that reply is weak, and doesn't pertain to the Cards...the Mets were trying to win, the Cards weren't. They said they weren't

Sigh...here I am trying to rehash old arguments with you. Come on...don't do this.
