Re: Fermin
I think we've already seen the answer to that. Fermin has proven to be a very valuable player, but it's because of how he's used.
He's an excellent utility player, a quality pinch-hitter against left-handed pitching, and someone who can competently fill in all over the field. His bat-to-ball skills, baseball IQ, and willingness to embrace whatever role he's given make him a real asset.
The problem is that whenever he's asked to play every day—or stay at one position for an extended period—his limitations become much more apparent. The offensive production tends to level off, and his defensive shortcomings become more noticeable when he's playing one spot every day instead of moving around.
His value comes from versatility, not everyday volume. Used in the right role, he's a player every contender would love to have. Asked to be an everyday second baseman, I don't think he'd hold up over a full season.

Yea but making two positions significantly weaker doesn’t make the team betterrockondlouie wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:19 pmOverexposure might not be a good thing OR
(But I think I see where you're going.....trade M. Winn for a starter, move JJW to SS?)

Well you would be strengthening the starting pitcher since Winn could bring back a low #2/high #3 starter.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:20 pmYea but making two positions significantly weaker doesn’t make the team betterrockondlouie wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:19 pmOverexposure might not be a good thing OR

And you would be getting a (future since I'm sure we agree JJW is going to just get better & better as a hitter) big boost of offense at SS.
I'm not for Fermin taking over 2nd base, but that position could be upgraded via FA or even another trade.
I have no issue dealing Winn for a starting pitcher sometime over the next two years.

Re: Fermin
And getting a regression in offense at second base while weakening the up the middle defense significantly and they would be losing close games because of it instead of winning them making the team worse doesn’t make the team betterrockondlouie wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:26 pmWell you would be strengthening the starting pitcher since Winn could bring back a low #2/high #3 starter.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:20 pmYea but making two positions significantly weaker doesn’t make the team betterrockondlouie wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:19 pmOverexposure might not be a good thing OR

Can SS get weaker? JJ is a shortstop and seems to be able to hit.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:20 pmYea but making two positions significantly weaker doesn’t make the team betterrockondlouie wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:19 pmOverexposure might not be a good thing OR

Re: Fermin
Won’t be as good defensively as Winn and second base will be worse offensively and way way worse defensively so you’re strengthening shortstop offensively weakening second base offensively and weakening both defensively with second base being significantly weaker defensively and Fermin is only slightly better than Winn on offense with Winn having a better OBPscoutyjones2 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:36 pmCan SS get weaker? How much is he worth in trade? Slowly turning into a poor man's Tommy Edman?

Winn doesn't play more than one position. What if Fermin focused on 2nd and only that, while JJ moves to SOzziesfan41 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:40 pmWon’t be as good defensively as Winn and second base will be worse offensively and way way worse defensively so you’re strengthening shortstop offensively weakening second base offensively and weakening both defensively with second base being significantly weaker defensively and Fermin is only slightly better than Winn on offense with Winn having a better OBPscoutyjones2 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:36 pmCan SS get weaker? Winn nets a starting pitcher high level prospect?

Re: Fermin
All you'd need to add for "+" Ozzie is to find a 2nd Baseman w/an OPS above .643 (Winn's current OPS) to have a positive offensive keystone combo!Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:33 pmAnd getting a regression in offense at second base while weakening the up the middle defense significantly and they would be losing close games because of it instead of winning them making the team worse doesn’t make the team betterrockondlouie wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:26 pmWell you would be strengthening the starting pitcher since Winn could bring back a low #2/high #3 starter.Ozziesfan41 wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:20 pmYea but making two positions significantly weaker doesn’t make the team betterrockondlouie wrote: ↑29 Jul 2026 12:19 pmOverexposure might not be a good thing OR

2027 FA 2nd Basemen:
Jazz Chisholm: 2024-Present - 71 HR/100 SB/.243 .320 .444 .765
Luis Arraez: 2024 -Present - 308 .343 .405 .748
Brandon Lowe: 2024-Present - 74 HR/210 RBI/.252 .313 .479 .792
Ozzie Albies (Club option)
Add any one of them and you've got a HUGE offensive upgrade at 2B to go along w/JJW at SS.
Fully acknowledging I'm giving up defense for a big offensive upgrade on a team desperate for offense.
But I'm willing to do that on this team since I'm upgrading the starting staff dealing Winn for pitching and the offense!
What have they won w/Winn? Nothing.
And neither of us has any idea if they'd "lose close games", that pure conjecture on your part.

Re: Fermin
Guys that I trust and have seen a lot of JJ Wetherholt say that he just doesn't have the arm to play SS on a long-term basis. I think that is a very bad idea and could end with him getting hurt.
I'm not saying that Winn is no doubt the guy at SS for the future (especially if he's looking for a big payday), but I'm not moving JJ to SS long-term.
