Pretty sure he was going to make whatever he wanted regardless of what Carlsson got paid.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence he’s getting paid slightly more to make him the highest paid player in the league.
The max contract Celebrini could have taken in 2027-2028 was $22.7 million per year (20% of cap). That was the starting point. Just mattered how much of a discount he wanted to give the Sharks.
18.8 M a year. There is no such thing as a discount. He got top dollar. Highest paid player in the league. He gave no discount.
He just turned 20 last month. He's already one of the best players in the league. He will be the face of the NHL. He could have gotten $22.7 million per year if he wanted. He gave a 17% discount.

Ok--Have your opinion.
Hes the highest paid player in the league at 18.8M a yr. He gave no discount.
We can agree to disagree. Technically he could have gotten the max but it doesnt mean he gave a discount. Thats not a thing in this case.

That is not top dollar, he negotiated shorter term to get full control at 26 instead of top dollar.

Its not really an opinion, there are mathematical facts. It is 100% fact that he did not get top dollar.

Are Crosby and Overchkin the only ones that have ever really gotten the max amounts?

I don't believe that Crosby has ever taken the max amount. Believe he has always given the Pens a discount.

The "villain" as it were here is Verbeek. Not only did he cost his owner through his tough guy cosplay he accelerated the salary hike for every other gm and team in the league.

since his 1st after entry level contract Crosby has taken 8.7m for 17 years no pay increase. wanted to have better players around him instead of all the greedy players that want top dollar. let see 8.7 X 17 years = 147.9Mil career wise smart man not greedy.

Agree that Verbeek was totally incompetent here and cost his team dearly. I think Briere owns some of that too. Going highest contract in the league for potential, knowing Verbeek would match, was an in your face move to all the franchises. Waiting for Briere and the Flyers to get their well deserved Karma wallop.

I didn't think Crosby did, but I couldn't remember exactly what the cap was when he extended. I'm pretty sure Ovi did.

NHL hasn't had someone sign a max contract since 2008 and apparently that was Brad Richards. Modern day it's just not a thing. Now the last calendar year, it might become one. Kaprizov really turned the screws on what people should or are expecting to get.

There was a huge market correction coming, Verbeek didn't cause it, it made an example out of him.

The numbers are the numbers and it was 100% inevitable

Times have changed and I'm sure Schaefer will sign something similar - they're betting that the market is going to be even better five years from now and they have the math to prove it will be.

There is really nothing new happening here, the player compensation was linked to revenue in like 05-06 and fans have been shocked almost every off season sense. The only thing that has really happens is covid putting a temporary stall on the evolution of player salaries.

Nothing major has changed at all outside the short term covid stall
