This thread reminds me of a thread years ago that a poster listed all of Army's bad trades to prove what an imcompetent GM he was. The first transaction listed was trading away DJ King to Washington for nothing.
Personally, I like having Ross Johnston on the Blues. This move is not going to define Steen's legacy as GM. Even if you don't agree with it, the games will be more fun to watch. The guy had almost 200 hits playing less than 10 minutes per game for 60 games.
That was Bomac, and there’s not a soul on this board as crazy as he was, not even Smelly.
You are correct that this minor deal is not going to define Steen, but what you’re saying is, bah! We don’t need offense, cause….hits!
Yes Bomac thanks! That's not at all what I said. I said he will be fun to watch play.
The case for Johnston is that he was defensively responsible last year, has enough speed to make hits, will be a net front presence, is a willing and competent fighter and adds energy to the 4th line. The downside is he may take too many unecessary penalties and won't score much.

Who is saying that? Where is all this offense they are forfeiting? Stenberg and his 12 goals in N America? Kaskimaki likely isn’t competing with Johnston, he is competing with Toropchenko, so Johnston doesn’t impact him. The Blues had the 8th most fights last season, mostly Tucker and Schenn. Do you really want Holloway or McMicahel or Neighbours fighting every few games? Someone needs to drop the gloves on occasion. I’d rather that be a guy on the 4th line scoring maybe 2 or 3 less goals per season over whoever replaces him, than having top 9 guys out there banging knuckles on the helmets of the O’Briens, Fredericks, McCarrons and Douglases of the league.
The amount of offense a team derives from any single fourth liner is normally marginal, near or even below replacement level. When 4th liners start producing consistently they tend to become middle-6.

Exactly. See Mathieu Olivier. Never had more than 15 points in a season until the last 2 years where he had 32 and 26. Still not a ton of offense, but he now plays top 9 for CBJ and is considered one of top 2-3 toughest guys in the league. Johnston will play a role. Guessing he gets 55-60 games and scores 10-15 points at MOST. He’s not here to score though, nor was Olivier his first 5 years in the league.
Everyone has their opinions and they have ALL been shared in this thread. LOL. Personally, I like the move and think he helps the team on and off the ice. My last post in this thread, as I really have nothing else to add. Bring on the season!!!
You just keep buying into that Steen and Army propaganda- good for you.
What’s the propaganda? Johnston has zero to do with any of the kids. Unless there was a 22 y.o. Johnston in the system (there isn’t) he isn’t holding anyone back. They were adding a physical presence to the 4th line, so Neighbours isn’t forced into the enforcer role Schenn had to play the last couple seasons. Those guys are going to be competing with Berggren, Finley, Toroochenko and Walker for roster spots. I don’t see what your issue is?

...Lack of experience and knowledge is the likely answer.
Or just years of seeing the same ol song and dance
What would be wrong with Neighbours playing that role? He’s a 3rd line 35 pt a year guy. Do you have bigger aspirations for him? I don’t. A poor man’s Tom Wilson would perfect. Then we wouldn’t spend an unnecessary contract on Johnston.
Neighbours doesn't intimidate anyone.
He fights maybe 5 times a year...Has he not gotten beaten up in any of them?
I get it, you'd rather watch the Ice Capades. Maybe we can get Kyrou back and he can perform as many triple jumps as you'd like.
I’d like a guy who can play the game not just be a goon. Some offensive upside. I’m quite aware you can’t win Cups with just ice dancers.
Johnston isn't a goon.
He brings more to the table than many fourth liners.
There aren't many Tom Wilsons or Oliviers in the league.
If the players on the team goes to management and says we are lacking this element....how can you blame management for filling an obvious need for the team.
You act as though Johnston is some slug who can barely skate and has stones for hands.. You obviously haven't seen him play much.
If you think the team sucks and has no chance...than save yourself time and grief and just don't watch it or post on here.
Just trying to help out....
Like I said earlier, in ‘19 we had Steen and Barbie on the 4th line, but now I’m supposed to get excited for Ross bleeping Johnston?
At the beginning of the season Steen wasn’t on the 4th line and Barby was no where near the player he was by seasons end.
The season is 80+ games for a reason. I guarantee you that the 4th line that opens the season is NOT the same one that finishes the season. I would bet my house on it.
Most likely true, I’ll agree with that. My point is though Steen could still play and put up some points, Barbie was a kid with upside. The 4th line shouldn’t be a black hole for offense. You’re not counting on them, but they should be able to provide something.
Again, I agree with what you are saying to a point. You should always try to be improving your team. Right now, our 4th line is much better than last years 4th line. And again, I would bet my house that they will be even better by seasons end. Nobody seems to remember just how God awful the Blues were in 2019 until January. They were one of the worst teams the Blues have ever put on the ice. That team grew, the roster had some tweaks added to it, and the team gelled.
The fact that anyone is freaking out over Ross Johnston is just shocking to me. The players were asking for a Johnston type. Most fans were asking for a Johnston type. I just don't get it. Every player needs to bring something to the table. Johnston is bringing something that NO ONE else on the team is even remotely capable of bringing.
My dream "get" would be Olivier...but those guys don't grow on trees and he gets paid 3M long term and that deal was signed before the cap got stupid.

Ok, I’ll clarify, then I think we’ve beaten this one sufficiently to death!
I wouldn’t necessarily have an issue with Johnston in a vacuum, 99 had McSorley after all, but it’s just the pattern of adding Johnston on top of Sunny on top of Finley, on top of extending Walker, and still having Torop around and any other bowl clogger I might have missed. We need to aim higher and not keep bring the same JAGs around one after another.

I know this is a Johnston thread, but I’m pretty close to Harry on who I think makes it. Top 8 a given. 3RW up for grabs probably. 4th line a battle along with 13/14th forwards.
Finley & Sunny extras
Dube & Walker waived to AHL or claimed
Kaski & Stenberg start in the AHL
When Stenberg gets called up, it’s for good.
Im also putting Kaskimaki in this camp with Stenberg whenever Kaskimaki gets the call hes here for good. I think the Blues like this kid, he checks a lot of boxes, checks, skates, scores. Could be a really good bottom 6er and i think Kaskimaki and Stenberg played on a line with Dvo in the AHL
Walker Torpo Berggren all signed to 2 yr deals Johnston 3 yrs. Contracts will be played over talent. Club doesn’t think kids are good enough. That’s why the extensions. Unless Suter is moved, there’s no spots.
You’re funny.
Hockey knowledge is tough…just try harder and don’t give up!
You just keep buying into that Steen and Army propaganda- good for you.
I never said anything like that.
The club thinking the kids aren’t good enough and the club thinking the kids aren’t ready yet are two totally different things.
One is obvious and logical….the other is what some dumb fans would say that don’t have a clue.
And those two year deals are a drop in the bucket…they will hold NO ONE back when it does comes time to making room for the young kids.
Guys like Walker and Torop are traded all the time for future considerations or even draft picks.
I don’t believe in propaganda. I believe my eyes and it is obvious what the Blues have done this off season. You shouldn’t hold it against them that they didn’t spell it out for you…..
It’s quite obvious don’t need it spelled out thanks. Club doesn’t think any of the recent draft picks even Dvorsky are good enough to play here so they took a swing at McTavish hoping he rebounds and the rest are fringe guys including Johnston. The re whatever continues…….
Every team has fringe guys.
Maybe 2 teams can truly roll 4 lines.
Very few teams have the talented youth in the pipeline that the Blues have.
This includes McTavish...who isn't here because of no faith in Divorsky.

Some of these takes are next to ludicrous.
McTavish will outperform Dvorsky this season. Don’t get me wrong, I like Dvo a lot….but McTavish has a higher cieling IMO.
We will see. Dvo will be a 3rd line center (if he stays at center). He could be a top 6 wing given time.
You can’t watch McTavish play and not see David Backes. He goes to the net like no one on our team and he is a beast down low. Dvo is a perimeter guy with a great one timer. They both need to improve their skating.

I wouldn't say Dvo is a "perimeter" guy because the book on him is he is creative in tight spaces. It just seems so far that from a scoring perspective he needs the space to get the shot off. Nothing wrong with that if he blends the 2 parts of his game. I am like you and I think McTavish is going to blow up this year. Nothing better than a player scorned who has the grit scoring ability. He has hands. I don't think he's quite the banger backes was, but he has the hands to make it work in those tight spaces and they both live in the same office.

that's what i was trying to express. he is always found himself in dirty areas and last year he never ran away from those spots. He just wasn't scoring which to me means he needs a little space today to get the shot off that he does have because he does have a weapon there. It will take longer for him to "progress" there I think because he's going to get pushed down the PP unit when he started somewhat high last year before coming up empty. I have a feeling you will have
PP1 Thomas Mctavish in front of net and then Hollywood Snuggs on the dots and Broberg on the point.
PP2 will be a hodge podge.

Dvo's game has always been driving to the net. In world stages he is found in the crease at both ends.
that's what i was trying to express. he is always found himself in dirty areas and last year he never ran away from those spots.
Dvo was tied for most pp goals on the team last year.

Dang that’s news to me. How many did he have? I thought he went cold and got pulled. But the PP was woefully bad so I guess it makes sense

Dvo's shot is lethal. It would be criminally insane (as described by Slayer) to keep him off the PP. He is like a Tarasenko mixed with ROR.
I swear the people b****ing about this signing don’t watch hockey. Ask Robert Thomas or Dylan Holloway if they want a guy like RJ on their team, guarantee it’s a yes
