I once watched him play an 18 inning game ( I may have inning wrong but it was a lot) and he was amazing on defense.

But his head wasn’t exactly screwed on right. One of the best Cardinal trades ever made.

He ended up having a pretty good 16-year career and matured as he aged.

Heard Cusamono talk of that promoting his show and there is a story behind that incident that they will cover Sunday. He said it sheds light on what was happening at that time and from his comments it ain't pretty.

The trade that helped propel the Cards to many titles. Templeton was a great player, but with his talent he could have been a hall of fame player. Whatever the reasons, he just couldn't keep the ship going in the right direction.

Garry Templeton told Frank Cusumano that the fans sitting behind the Cardinals dugout were shouting racial slurs at him as he walked off the field at Busch Stadium in August 1982. The racial slurs directed towards Garry Templeton started earlier in the game before Whitey Herzog pulled him into the dugout. Garry said other Cardinal players heard the racial slurs directed at him but his teammates didn't care what was being said by the Cardinal fans.

apparently he was the only player to ever do it but ... years later they now say he only had between 94 and 96 hits RH and he apparently didn't play the last few games that year because he thought the record was in hand

Wrong.
He played 10 years with San Diego beginning at age 26! He only played 713 games with the Cardinals. That turf did not eat up Ozzie Smith who played over 1900 games on that turf after starting with St. Louis at age 27..........

Yeah, his 79 season doesn't show he had 100 from each side and Willie Wilson the next year was like 1 hit shy of actually doing it

Fans were wrong in 1982, and 44 years later it’s still wrong, but the player responding to it makes the taunting worse. Maybe Templeton felt betrayed by his teammates.

Just getting to 200 hits in a season is getting pretty hard to do anymore. Wondered about Jose Ramirez's numbers, but after looking he's never has had more than 186 in a season. Would think it'd take around 240 total hits for a SH to have a shot at 100 being from his RH side. If it took less, maybe that player would be better off being RH all the time, but for extreme speed guys, maybe that'd be different.

Well, without walking in someone else's shoes first and experiencing things first hand, our views may not be well rounded.
