If I Made Up My Mind To Trade Kyle Leahy

Post by Talkin' Baseball »

This isn't a thread about whether we should trade Kyle Leahy, or not. This is about what that would look like if the decision was already made.

Leahy would be desirable for any contender because he is pitching very well presently, he has role versatility, he is 29 years old, and has 3 years of team control after this one. As a reference point, his most recent BTV is 11.5. As Craviduce pointed out in a thread Friday, you should probably expect a premium above his value due to the factors listed above and a scarcity of sellers.

Here are some suggested packages from contending teams:
Tampa Bay- #22 Jose Urbina (7.9) P and Brailer Guerrero RF (0.5) + ?
Seattle- #5 Michael Arroyo (12.3) 2B-OF
Houston- #7 Ethan Frey (6.9), Hudson Leach (1.8) RP, + ?
Minnestoa- #13 Adrian Bohrquez (4.2) P, #15 Brandon Winokur (8.4) SS/3B/CF or #12 Quentin Young (6.9) SS/3B
Boston- #17 Sadbiel Delzine (11.2) P, + ?
Baltimore- #22 Wilfri De La Cruz (3.5) SS, Andri Hidalgo (4.5) P, + ?
Detroit- #7 Malachi Witherspoon (4.2), #21 Franyerber Montilla (6.8) INF, + ?
Miami- #12 Santiago Solarte (7.2) SS, #19 Nate Payne (2.4) P, #29 Yohanfer Santana (1.6) P
Philadelphia- #6 Dante Nori (5.9) CF, #4 Ramon Marquez (6) P, #14 Wen-Hui Pan (1.4) RP
Arizona- #16 Welington Aracena (7.5) P, Jordan Lawler (5.5) 3B/OF

Is there anything here that could get done? Looking through a 5 year lense, is there anything here you would prefer to have over Leahy?
You can look any of these players up on Baseball America, or MLB Pipeline, or if you want to ask about them I'd be glad to reply.
Other contenders who could seek pitching help: Braves, Blue Jays, Yankees, Guardians, Dodgers, White Sox, Padres, and Nationals.

It really isn’t. Prospects ranked outside of their teams top Five are rarely expected to become franchise changers.

Meanwhile trading Leahy becomes a gift to some contender who probably doesn’t deserve him and takes him out of whatever future window we should be creating this decade and creates another big hole.

If you can trade him for an established Young All-Star like Jim Edmonds or Edgar Renteria- then that’s another question and it might be interesting, especially if we think we can sell high and by low.

JJ Abram’s package?

You and I see it way differently. That's ok.

Closest comp to Edmonds age production wise that I could think of is Austin Riley or Gunnar Henderson. But I don’t think either has fallen enough out o favor yet and Riley’s has been a gradual decline that has picked up quicker over the last year.

I would ponder offers for Leahy, but not jump right into it. Developing starting pitchers is tough unless you are a clone of Dave Duncan. I would have to be overwhelmed to pull the trigger on that one.

As Cards could use another (any) 3b prospect, Twins package. This young man please...

Quentin Young
SS/3B, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, A

• AGE 19
• BATS R
• THROWS R
• HT 6' 6"
• WT 225
• ETA 2029

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 60 | Run: 50 | Arm: 65 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

There were amateur scouts who put at least a 70 on Young’s raw power. Now it’s up to the Twins to help find ways to get to it more consistently. At 6-foot-6, he has long levers and there will likely always be some swing-and-miss to his game.

But he’s already gotten to work in simplifying things, spending all offseason at the Twins complex. He came in with a number of different looks at the plate, and he has retooled completely, focusing on removing the bail to his swing, quieting down some postural things that made his swing even longer, all while adding depth to his bat path. All of it could give Young the chance to tap into his power right out of the gate.

With his size, evaluators gave him almost no chance to stick at shortstop, his position in high school. He’ll still get reps there, with good actions and close to a double-plus arm that works from anywhere, but most see third as the best spot for him if he’s going to stay on the dirt.

I'm intrigued by him too. He is definitely a project though. Striking out over 45% of the time. 8O Freakish athlete. Loud tools.

If you start trading some of these young arms that are really showing significant improvement you are starting to talk about a very long time for the rebuild. We have to start building around a core and in my book McG, Pallante and Leahy are part of that core.

Interesting, but what would it take to get someone like that who isn't creating a long term hole on the ML roster? Maybe someone on an expiring contract in a 3 way trade? JoJo?

I'm leaning this way too. Or trade sideways. Not for guys born after 2007. We are already young enough.

His BTV is 6.9. Something like Pedro Pages (to replace Jeffers either traded, or FA) (3.7) and JoJo (1.7), and maybe a low level piece with them.

I believe Leahy is under control for 4 seasons after this one.
Pallante just 2.
If there is to be a trade of a starting pitcher in addition to May, the conversation should be around Pallante (2 years of control) and Liberatore (3 years of control.
Not Leahy.

Another intriguing name on your list...

Michael Arroyo from Seattle.
Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

Plays 2nd and outfield, already in AAA, Decent arm and fielding. Can he be a 3B going forward, or is 5'10" just too short for third?

I know his fielding grade says 50, but he's not good with the glove anywhere. Great bat.

That's an interesting comparison to Gunnar Henderson because Edmonds really was on the outs in Anaheim when we made that deal, due to both injuries and perceived attitude issues. I'd love to see a Henderson deal.
