The Rule V draft won't happen until there's a new CBA, correct?Wattage wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 07:36 amhttps://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resour ... /cardinalsOzziesfan41 wrote: ↑25 Jul 2026 21:36 pmGood question a lot would depend on who all has to be added to the 40 man and who the cards pick up but i personally probably would go with the calculated gamble of not protecting him like they did with blaze unless he finishes super strong at Memphis then you may protect him but if he struggles the rest of the year no. Great glove at every OF position. Puts the ball on the ground way too much and K's quite a bit....struggles to hit for average. The power is there, but hasn't been realized.
he does walk a lot. that's a plus

Theres a tab that has options or rule 5 status. Ones needing to be added are either saying dec 26 or r5 if they already cleared rule 5 this year but would need to again next year.
I really dont see that many important names that have to be added this offseason other than quinn mathews and jesus baez.
Entering the year it maybe looked like ixan henderson would need to be protected at years end following his 2025 but he instead was injured all year this season so we dont have to worry about that.
Looks like they have 38 on 40 man now and could trade or drop 5 easily. So assuming 7 players can be added.
Looking at that FanGraphs site, I don't see 7 players unprotected before Chase Davis. Looking at Rule V eligible at AAA, AA, even Hi A. There are some obvious protections. But also there are aging players that wouldn't care if they got drafted.
Chase is in the edge of aging out. But I protect him this year. Chance we need a 4th or 5th outfielder next year if he can step forward. If he's a throwin in a trade so be it.

they usually dont fill up the entire roster before the rule 5 draft. they usually like to leave a few slots open for free agents. because if you add a guy to the 40 man roster to protect him from rule 5 draft, but then sign a free agemt and waive the guy from the 40 man roster to make room, then any team merely has to claim the player to their 40 man roster to take and keep control of the player.RunSup wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 10:12 amThe Rule V draft won't happen until there's a new CBA, correct?Wattage wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 07:36 amhttps://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resour ... /cardinalsOzziesfan41 wrote: ↑25 Jul 2026 21:36 pmGood question a lot would depend on who all has to be added to the 40 man and who the cards pick up but i personally probably would go with the calculated gamble of not protecting him like they did with blaze unless he finishes super strong at Memphis then you may protect him but if he struggles the rest of the year no. but if you leave the guy exposed in the rule v draft, then the team actually has to keep tbe player on their major league roster the entire year to keep control.
thus why teams will often not fil lthe 40 man and try to sneak a few players not adding them if they dont think a team will claim them to mlb roster all year.
cuz its much easier for teams to keep and claim a player off waivers to keep on their 40 man roster all year than to claim in rule 5 draft and keep on major league roster all year
still there likely is room if they prioritize him. only a couple we legitimately need to be worried about on the list.

No
I'd include him in any deals C. Bloom makes this week or next hoping to up the return a bit.

Depending on the deal, sometimes it doesn't even have to up the return if just gets you from "no" to "yes".rockondlouie wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 11:18 am No

Re: Would you protect Chase Davis this winter?
I posted earlier when Chase was moved to AAA that I was puzzled by the promotion.
It was obvious that stats didn't warrant it. Video I had watched didn't show anything positive.
Now based on 40-man decision looming, I think AAA was a move to help with the decision.
So far I have seen more video of chase.
My opinion is let him go in Rule 5. He might not even be picked.
Then we are left with decision as to when to DFA him!!

Definitely, let him go in Rule 5.cards53 wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 11:33 am I posted earlier when Chase was moved to AAA that I was puzzled by the promotion.

He has his chances to show what he can do but he simply can't hit at a Major League Level.
Mo blew it when he drafted him.
My opinion when we drafted him was he would be a "bust".
Well, today, he is a "bust".

Mathews will be up soon, replacing one of the pitchers, but yeah there are lots of options. Davis is currently on the fringeTalkin' Baseball wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 06:44 amWhat you say is true, but they have many others competing for the spots of protection. The current 40 man has a bit of dead weight and / or trade bait if you ask me (Gorman, Scott, Saggese, Prieto, Velazquez, Torres, Pages). The pitching side has plenty of cuts as well
So they could easily find room if they want
Jesus Baez
Travis Honeyman
Colton Ledbetter
Won-Bin Cho
Quinn Mathews
Pete Hansen
Ixan Henderson
Chen Wei Lin
Hancel Rincon
Austin Love
Jose Suarez
Lionel Sequera
Jacob Odle
Sammy Hernandez
Ramon Mendoza
Tre Richardson III
Cade Winquest
Yordalin Pena
For me, if the Cardinals could come up with, say 7 roster spots, Davis wouldn't make the list of 7.

Just depends if he plays well enough to warrant protection. If he flounders the rest of the season, he probably goes undrafted anyway2ninr wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 06:47 amWhen you put it that way it makes sense to expose someone else and give him another year in this system.cosmo.kramer wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 00:59 amDepends how he finishes the season, but I wouldn't be shockedcraviduce wrote: ↑25 Jul 2026 21:27 pm 2023 Draft, 1st round pick. Fangraphs was saying 26 in 2021 https://blogs.fangraphs.com/checking-in ... ing-curve/cosmo.kramer wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 00:50 amThey've used age curves for contracts for quite a while now. Or, perhaps I should say there is little evidence to suggest any achieved upside can be sustained if it was dependent on peak physical maturity. There are one or two actuarial studies out there on this topic. I don't know if that type of work has penetrated into baseball analytics.
But the study I was thinking of looked at career length by the age the player reached MLB. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3184466/ Granted that the data used ends at 2003 and looked at non-pitchers only.
But where ever that age is, if it's only that peak of maturation that can get you to MLB, then it kind of makes sense--to me anyway--that the bell curve of a career looks more like a candlestick, or perhaps falling off a table.

Personally, I’d protect Davis over keeping Scott. Davis plays pretty good defense and at least has a chance at the plate.

Agree 100%, keep Davis over Scott. Davis is as fast, much better arm, can play all three OF positions, strikes out a lot, like Vic, but when he connects he has much more power than Vic.hornetfb52 wrote: ↑27 Jul 2026 09:14 am Personally, I’d protect Davis over keeping Scott. Plus, Davis is nearly a year younger than Scott and, since he hasn't been in the majors, will be cheaper than Vic.

There's a ton of dead weight that we could cut first but just in general I'm not sure I see a future for Davis. Hasn't done much and not sure he fits the profile of the new front office. I'd even be fine throwing him in a trade over the next week
