Seems like they could use both a SP and a closer.
Cubs farm system is supposedly deeper in position players.
May helped his value.

If nothing else, that would certainly be very interesting - and entertaining.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑25 Jul 2026 11:54 am Wonder if the Cardinals could package May and O'Brien to the Cubs.

It would require both teams to get off their informal and inane "don't trade with our archrival" stance. The last trade they made was a minor one in 2007. If it makes future Cardinal teams better I'm fine.mattmitchl44 wrote: ↑25 Jul 2026 11:54 am Wonder if the Cardinals could package May and O'Brien to the Cubs.

Re: May helped his value.
Dobbins and Matthews are ready to enter the rotation. They will struggle, but I do not think they will struggle near as much as if the team throws them in the bullpen instead. That breaks the mojo of a starting pitcher and both guys would be starters in 2027 and beyond. To accomplish this May needs traded and Liberatore back to the bullpen. May will only bring a decent mid level prospect if packaged with someone else of value like a Nootbar or Herrera that still has some control left. The problem is going to be innings load for Mathews since he has been starting regularly all year. It all comes down to how committed Bloom is to the rebuild process. They have to fix the bull pen and Libby would help with that. He just does not have starter pedigree at this point. May is on a 1 year deal and has no future with the Cardinals. He needs to be traded. Any quality starts at this point will help the value.

20 starts, 10 QS, 1.317 WHIP, averages over 5 innings a start, 8.9K/9inn. A not so great 4.59 ERA.
Not great, but definitely back half of rotation material

With Skubal, Miller, Hancock, etc supposedly on the market, just do not see a contending team eyeing May as must have.
No:
Brewers
Phillies - unless Mattingly would want him.
Guardians
Mariners
Yanks
TB
Dodgers
Maybe:
Cubs - 3 way deal
Braves
D Backs
R Sox
W Sox
Rangers

Re: May helped his value.
May has been a very average pitcher his entire career and often injured.
The most innings he has ever pitched is 132.1
This year he has pitched 104 innings to tie his second best.
He is 24 - 27 in his career with a 4.04 era.
This year he has given up 104 hits in 104 innings.
Why would a good team make a big offer for him?
If he was that good, he would have signed a bigger contract with another team instead with the Cardinals.
He is and always has been an Eric Fedde type pitcher.

Peak May is electric. Peak Fedde was solid. Hope a bidding war develops and get the highest return.OldRed wrote: ↑25 Jul 2026 13:22 pm May has been a very average pitcher his entire career and often injured.

Bloom should jump the wave and deal him before his next start.

He just has to be be a major improvement on your worst starter. That potentially wins you a few games. For a team trying to get a playoff spot or division and has a black hole at the end of the rotation, those 2/3 extra wins are worth it.CCard wrote: ↑25 Jul 2026 11:36 amI've seen enough of May. He's just not consistent enough. 1 great start and then mediocrity for 2 or 3 starts. I guess that's why the Cards were able to get him.RichieRichSTL wrote: ↑24 Jul 2026 21:21 pm With a very solid performance. If you only are offered a lottery ticket, keep him as he has more value in helping this team making the playoffs than some player that odds are he won't do much.
If they were 10 games under .500 you trade him for what you can get. They have a puncher chance to make the playoffs, so keep him if playoffs is only a loytery ticket.
Do you see trade him before his next start? Another solid effort builds up his value, but another 5 inning 5 runs effort hurts it.

Re: May helped his value.
Over at BTV, a SP's value can fluctuate a little with each start before the deadline. May's eroded a little with his last bad start, from +5.6 to +4.5, and now will go up with his last good start, I'd guess to about +6. Same for position players. Herrera's BTV was over +20 just a couple weeks ago and has now has slid to the mid teens. Noot's has slid down a little, from +4.4 to 3.7.
It's all with a grain of salt, but there's likely some fluidity based on performance all the way to the finish line, or in this case the trading deadline.

May’s last start was probably impactful to GMs, given his recent July skid.JDW wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 06:47 am Over at BTV, a SP's value can fluctuate a little with each start before the deadline. I think so. Hope they trade him before his next scheduled start just to minimize any chance he accidently cuts himself with a knife.ecleme22 wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 09:29 amMay’s last start was probably impactful to GMs, given his recent July skid.JDW wrote: ↑26 Jul 2026 06:47 am Over at BTV, a SP's value can fluctuate a little with each start before the deadline.
